Correspondent The winners at the 2000 Pennsylvama/Maryland Simmental Field Days proved that older is not always better. While three of the top placing Simmentals were handled by young people over the age of 14, the Reserve Grand Champion Heifer was owned by 9-year-old Luke Phipps of Harford County, Md. Phipps, who lives on Windy Knoll Farm in Street, has been showing cattle since last year. He said he chose Pond View Blossom as his entry for this year’s field days at Triple L Farms in New Oxford for two reasons "She was bigger than the other ones (on the farm) and she had a pretty face," he said. The judges were more impressed with her capacity for her age and with her structural soundness and selected her from a field of four entries. The Grand Champion Heifer was Raymond Slough’s Shoemaker’s Proud. Mary Stough, of North Codorus Township in York County, is in his last year of showing m the junior association, since he is 20. Among the steers, the Grand Champion was WSCC Wall to Wall, shown by Ashley Vosloh of Mt. Airy, Md. The Reserve Grand Champion was Harry, shown by Shane Smithson of White Hall, Md. Tammi Grubb of Hanover walked away with first place in the showmanship in the senior class, Grubb, 19, has been showing cattle for 11 years and GEORGETOWN HYDRAULICS Answering Service 610-593-2753 *8 to 10 A.M.
