Nelson McCammon or Monroe, Wis., and Cindy Warner,
president of the Maryland Brown Swiss Breeders Associa
tion, are both fans of the breed. McCammon, described by
Cindy’s husband Bill Warner as “The godfather of the
Brown Swiss,” has helped many young people get their
start with the breed.
McCammon has been in the agriculture business for
over 50 years and showed cattle across the U.S. and
abroad.
“With experience it (showing cows) comes easy. You
don’t learn it by the book,” said McCammon.
“When kids call me and ask, 'Where can I get a heifer?’, I
buy them a heifer and they take care of it, manage it, breed
it, show it, and sell it if they want to,” explained McCam
mon, who gives half the money back to the heifer’s keeper
or allows them to buy their half of the animal. He estimates
that over the past 8-10 years he’s helped 25-30 young
people.
“I’m 80 years old and I’m still learning from young
people,” said McCammon. “It keeps me young.”
