The Brown Cow
(ConttniMd from P«a* AM)
About 65 milk cows make up
the herd, including IS registered
Brown Swiss cows. With young
stock, the farm hosts 30 Brown
Swiss animals. Terry, Kevin and
Rich each take a shift to milk
three times a day.
A genetic honor herd, Little
Hill’s Brown Swiss cows average
over 24,000 pounds. The farm
has also been recognized as
having the highest Brown Swiss
production in the state in the
small herd category.
Rich cites disposition and
lower upkeep as traits of the
breed. “They’re easier mainte
nance than Holsteins. They’re
just healthier cows in general,
with better feet and legs, and
you have less twisted stomach.”

“Every time you go to a dif

you can learn,” said Daubert,
who has 150 Swiss milk cows
and 150 Swiss young stock. Ten
Holsteins are used as recipients
for Brown Swiss stock.
Daubert’s family includes his
wife, Rhoda, and children
Rhonda, Dean, Dennis, Ronald
Ray, Anne and Allen. Besides
the cattle Wind Mill Farms
raises 400 acres of com, pasture,
and alfalfa.
The Dauberts have a world
wide impact on Brown Swiss
genetics, as they have exported
cattle and embryos to Brazil,
Colombia, and Mexico.

Bom and raised on the home
farm, Daubert began in 1950
with about 10 Brown Swiss.
Daubert’s extended experience
has helped him identify the
strengths of the breed.
“Brown Swiss carries a high
protein milk which most cows
don’t carry. Cheese makers like
it. They get the most amount of
cheese out of 100 pounds of milk
from Brown Swiss milk.”
“They can milk with the
others and have excellent feet
and legs,” said Daubert.
“They’re the strongest breed of
any dairy cattle. They’re long
lived and very docile.”
