LAST WEEK 1992 1779

CATTLE: Compared to last week’s
closing prices, slaughter steers and heif
ers closed steady to .50 lower. Losses
came early in the week on light demand,
but increased Kosher interest late in the
week stabilized prices at the lower level.
This week’s offering was fairly attrac
tive, but the plainer Select cattle sold
better, in relation to the Choice cattle,
than they have in several weeks. Loads
of inexpensive Western cattle continue
to pass by our local auctions on the way
to Eastern packing plants. As soon as
competition improves by the big four
packers for Midwestern cattle, the local
market should improve significantly.
Major feedlots sold cattle steady to 1.00
lower from 66.00-67.00 live and 106.00-
107.00 dressed. Local Holstein steers
closed steady to 1.00 lower. Slaughter
cows ended 2.00-3.00 lower with the full
decline on the leaner-type cows. Bone
less beef prices have plunged since the
July 4th holiday. Slaughter bulls sold
1.00 lower. Supply included 42 pet
