The results of Perdue University research demon strated not only greater vigor, but a production increase of Vi ton hay per acre on the first cut ting where leafhoppers had been controlled the previous year. With a pest at hand that can inflict such devastating damage to such an important crop, why is it that so many farmers don’t take care of business and control this pest, especially in second cutting? This year is a buggy year. Al falfa weevils were more damag ing this year than any year since the 19705. That was a wake-up call. We’ve been hearing all spring that the growing season is “ahead” this year. So why didn’t more farmers get around to spraying alfalfa fields for leaf hoppers when they reached the economic threshold? Why are so many second cutting alfalfa stands “hopper burned” and yellow? I think it’s because farmers didn’t bother to check their fields to see if leaf hoppers were there in damaging numbers. I’m not talking about taking off your cap and running it through the alfalfa once or twice and looking to see if you got one. I’m talking about using a net and applying integrated pest management. An insect sweep net is an es sential leafhopper management Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 15, 2000-A37 tool for every grower trying to maximize yields and quality and to apply good management. How many of you have one and know how to use it? If you don’t have one, why not? By the time you see the yellow “hopper burn,” the damaging losses are already occurring. If you look at yellowing alfalfa and tell your self “we’ll see once what hap pens,” you are losing forage quality in all the ways listed above. Buy a sweep net or make one. Instructions on how to make an insect sweep net are in the spe cial circular referenced above. You can buy a sweep net from any popular farm supply cata log. A 12-year-old can learn how to use it. If you don’t want to do it yourself, then pay a consultant to check them for you it will be worth it. If you don’t have time to spray the fields yourself, it will pay your operation to hire a custom operator. The economic thresholds are in the special cir cular referenced above. Your alfalfa is a cornerstone of your dairy operation. You cannot afford to ignore the damage that leafhoppers are doing to it.
