BAIR (York Co.) Fifty-five
4-H’ers from seven counties par
ticipated in the Southeast Re
gional 4-H Livestock Judging
Contest last week here at the
York 4-H Center.
A prelude to the State 4- H
Days at Penn State, for the first
time the regional livestock
judging contest was opened to
other counties.
At last week’s event, Perry and
Susquehanna counties, in addi
tion to teams from several coun
ties in southeast Pennsylvania,
participated.
Some counties “don’t have the
facilities or resources to do some
thing like this,” said Linda
Spahr, contest coordinator and
York County extension agent.
Top senior individual at the
contest was Ann Leed, 18,
daughter of Robert and Nancy
Leed, Myerstown. Ann’s total
score was 501 with a reason’s
total of 135.
Ann, who will study animal
science and preveterinary med
icine at lowa State in the fall, has
been a 4-H member for nine
years.
A 2000 Eastern Lebanon
County High School graduate,
Ann said her strength in the re
gional contest was reasons. “I
struggled with the sheep
judging,” she said. “Normally I
do really well with that.”
Ann said that the regional con
test first place team from Leba
non County, consisting of Tim
Schaeffer, herself, and Travis
Adam, recently placed first in the
national Cattail Classic in Wood
bine, Md. The classic hosts teams
from Pennsylvania,
Maryland, North Car
olina, and other states.
“It’s a big contest,”
she said.
Ann is a member of
tHe Lebanon County
4-H Sheep and Beef
Club. She is sheep club
news reporter and beef
club secretary.
Ann noted that she
won at the regional
livestock competition
three or four years
ago. She served as
president of the Elco
FFA and lives on her
family’s sheep and
beef farm.
Brandy Bankert, 13, daughter
of Sue and Wayne Bankert and
Red Lion High School ninth
grader, won top junior individu
al.
Brandy, with a total score of
343, is a member of the York 4-H
Lamb and Wool Club.
A six-year 4-H member, Bran
dy won the contest for the first
time.
Her strength, Brandy noted,
was judging sheep. The Bankerts
raise Southdown sheep on their
farm. The York County team
placed third at the regional con
test.
Brandy says she plans to enroll
in Red Lion FFA.
Senior championship team
went to Lebanon County, consis
ting of Travis Adam, Ann Leed,
and Tim Schaeffer. Junior cham
pion team went to Lancaster
County, which consisted of Joe
lynn Donough, Adam Zurin, and
Johanna Rohrer.
Judges for the event were Bob
Mikesell, associate swine special
ist at Penn State, beef judge;
Dave Greene, retired Carroll
County, Maryland extension
agent, sheep judge; and Kent
Strode, Mechanicsburg, swine
judge.
In the contest, participants
judged two classes of market
hogs, Simmental heifers, cross
bred market steers, Southdown
yearling ewes, and a class of
market lambs. There was a total
of eight animals for each species.
Each year the contest sponsors
rotate the location. Next year the
