From colonial times to the
present, the grasslands in Pennsyl
vania have been well recognized
but often ignored. Because of its to
pography, soils, and climate, grass
land agriculture has always been
well suited to the Keystone State.
By 1900, the natural advantages
of Pennsylvania as a grassland state,
together with the economic advan
tages of closeness to markets, made
the dairy industry the most import
ant farm enterprise of the state, and
has made Pennsylvania one of the
leading dairy states in the U.S.
We’ve included a brief history of
grassland agriculture in the state
from colonial times to the present in
a new book entitled “PFGC-The
First 40 Years” to be published this
month by the Pennsylvania Forage
and Grassland Council. You will get
