Angus enthusiasts gathered for the 2000 Eastern Regional Junior Angus Show, June 23-25 in Leb anon, Ohio. Junior Angus members exhib ited 226 owned females, 97 bred and-owned females, 15 bred and-owned bulls, 41 steers and 12 cow-calf pairs. Jeff Gooden, Iberia, Mo., evaluated the 391 entries before selecting the respective champi ons. Jenna Gilbert, Greenville, Ohio, showed the grand cham pion bred-and-owned bull. State Treasurer Barbara Hafer said Pennsylvania farm ers may file claims for liquid fuels tax refunds between July 1 and Sept. 30. Hafer, who chairs the Board of Finance and Revenue, said claim forms must be returned postmarked no later than Sept. 30 to the Board of Finance and Revenue, Motor Fuels Section, 1101 S. Front St., Suite 410, Harrisburg, PA 17104-2540. “Any person who uses liquid fuels in the actual production of agricultural products is eligible for refunds,” she said. “Last year,” she said, “board staff processed 9,039 claims and paid $3,510,400 in refunds. The March average claim paid was $338 with a range of $2.39 to a farmer in Wayne County and $31,580 paid to a family of farmers in Lancaster County. The refunds are 25.9 cents per gallon for gas oline and 30.8 cents per gallon for kerosene and diesel fuel.” Each claim must include copies of paid receipts or a state ment from the fuel dealer that shows the number of gallons purchased, purchase dates, and verification that the state taxes (liquid fuels and fuel us) were paid. E-Town Student Outstanding Senior In Penn State’s College Of Agricultural Sciences UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre Co.) Justin Howes of Elizabethtown, son of Sue Kauffman and Jay Howes, has been selected as the outstanding senior in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences. Howes, who will graduate in December, is majoring in agri cultural business management, with minors in agricultural eco nomics and rural sociology and animal science. Howes has been particularly active in preparing for his postcollege career through ex tensive experience on farms and in the business world. In the summer of 1999, he interned for Cargill Inc.’s Animal Nutrition Division in Lebanon, designing an animal biosecurity plan that was featured by the company at the World Dairy Expo in Madi son, Wis. He also interned at the Pennsylvania Holstein Associa tion in 1999, working on mem bership drh«B and creating a membership survey to evaluate Intermediate Champion Heifer. Megan Weisel. From 1997-1998, Howes was a farm worker at Sunnyhill Farm in Manheim, where he helped supervise a 60,000-bird pullet operation and performed field work and other farm mainte nance. He also worked at Star Rock Farms Dairy in Cones toga, where he performed feed ing, milking, and other responsibilities for a 300-cow milking herd from 1993-1998. Howes has served as a College of Agricultural Sciences ag ad vocate since 1998. He and the other advocates represent the college at major events, includ ing Penn State’s Ag Progress Days and the Pennsylvania State Farm Show. Ag advocates support the college’s efforts to enhance the image of agricul ture and recruit highly qualified students.
