Sussex County Farm, Horse
Show Is New Jersey State Fair
The first fair in Sussex
County was Nov. 7-8 in 1821
and included both Sussex and
Warren counties.
The fair seemed to die with
the division of the counties in
1827. In 1857, a new fair was or
ganized and this one continued
through the Civil War until it
closed down in the late 1860 s. It
was tried again in 1880.
According to Alex Everitt, in
his book “Living on the Farm,”
the current Farm and Horse
Show started in 1919 when
Branchville businessmen, in co
operation with the Sussex
County Extension Service, con
ducted a three-day show from
Sept. 24-26. The horse show
started in 1924 at Ross’s Corner
and by 1926 had moved to
Branchville at a private track at
the Base Farm.
The Sussex County Farm and
Horse Show was incorporated
on April 26,1940, as a nonprofit
organization of volunteers.

money was donated to charity;
however, the tradition of chari
table contributions to local or
ganizations has continued to
this day.
During the war years of 1942-
1945, no farm and horse shows
were conducted. However, a 4-H
show was hosted.
In 1946, a big show was orga
nized, complete with a 4-H dairy
show, draft horse show, saddle
horse show, and a team pulling
contest. In 1947, the fair became
a four-day show.
The year 1955 brought disas
ter with Hurricane Connie and
the Farm and Horse Show bor-
rowed money to cover costs.
In 1961, Dean Uptegrove, a
recognized local artist, was in
vited to start the art and photog
raphy section of the fair.
The small town fair was
quickly out growing its space.
The directors voted to purchase
the 126-acre McDonald’s Farm
in Augusta, N.J. in 1963. During
1969, a land trade was made to
expand the fairgrounds on the
same side of Plains road. By
1973, roads and a pond had been
Demo and New Equipment
Vehicles
constructed on the new site. A
concentrated effort was made to
develop the new grounds and
move in time for the nation’s bi
centennial. In 1977, the live
stock committee decided to
build permanent bams to house
livestock.
Each year the committee un
dertook new projects. There are
five livestock barns, The Snook
Memorial Museum, the Rich
ards Building, the Livestock
Show Pavilion and Cafe, the
Mini Milking Parlor, and the
Small Animal Pavilion. In 1983,
IS additional acres were pur
chased from Ideal Farms to be
developed into the outdoor rec
reation area for the tractor pull
and other forms of entertain
ment.
The Horse Show Committee
volunteers built a 60-stall horse
barn in 1986.
The Sussex County Farm and
Horse Show received the Volun
teer Award from the Sussex
County Chamber of Commerce
in 1986. This award was given as
a clear example of the spirit of
“People Helping People”
toward a better Sussex County.
