World Dairy Expo Names 2000 Judges MADISON, Wis. World Dairy Expo names eight industry representatives and producers as official judges for the 2000 show scheduled for October 4-8 at the Dane County Expo Center in Madison, Wisconsin. The dairy cattle show judges were nominat ed by last year’s dairy cattle ex hibitors and/or breed associations and ratified by Expo’s board of directors. Judging the almost 2,000 head of cattle will be: Ay shire Wayne Sliker, St. Paris, Ohio; Brown Swiss Brian Gar rison, Tiffin, Ohio; Brown Swiss Associate Steve White, New Castle, Indiana; Guernsey Blaine Grosser, Marysville, Ohio; Holstein Chris Hill, Mt. Airy, Maryland; Holstein Associate World Dairy Expo Honors Four Dairy Industry Leaders And Producers MADISON, Wis. Honored this year will be: Dairyman of the Year Howard Voegeli, Monticello, Wisconsin; Dairy Woman of the Year Bemeta Snider Gable, New Enterprise, Pennsylvania; International Person of the Year Heinrich Meli, Bad Ragaz, Switzerland; and Industry Per son of the Year Miles “Mac” McCarry, Deltona, Florida. “This year’s winners are an exceptional group of people who have wholeheartedly made the dairy cow and the dairy industry their life. They are people who have guided and improved the industry, each in their own way. In doing so, they’ve earned the respect of their peers and World Dairy Expo,” said World Dairy Expo’s General Manager, Tom McKittrick. A special presentation honor ing these award winners will be held during World Dairy Expo at the 2000 Dinner With the Stars, Tuesday, October 3. Dairyman Excels In Sound Genetics And Leadership The Dairyman of the Year is a well-known ambassador for the dairy industry, World Dairy Expo, and the Brown Swiss breed. Voegeli, Howard Monticello, Wis., owns Voegeli Farms, Inc. and Voegeli Interna- tional, a business that markets cattle, semen, and embryos to for eign countries. Voegeli’s great grandfather, a Swiss immigrant, founded the farm in 1854. His grandfather intro- duced the first regis- tered Brown Swiss to the herd in 1895 Those animals were the foundation for to- day’s 105-cow herd. After graduating from the University of Wis- consin in 1952, Voege- li took over the al- ready outstanding herd, and through careful genetic selec- tion built a herd that today boasts a 24,742-pound rolling Gerald Coughlin, Jr., Peterbo rough, Ontario, Canada; Jersey Larry Schirm, Columbus, Ohio; Milking Shorthorn Brian Garrison, Tiffin, Ohio; and Red & White Callum McKinven, Melbourne, Quebec, Canada. Top Acres maintains about ISO-registered Brown Swiss and a smaller select group of Hol steins near St. Paris, Ohio. The herd is very active in showing and promotion with 92 All- Americans and 86 Reserve All- Americans which leads the all- lactation average. The herd aver ages 960 pounds of fat and 807 pounds of protein. His emphasis on exporting good cattle, em bryos and semen has put the herd’s genetics on six continents. The herd not only excels in production, but also type. Voege li cattle have earned 195 All- American nominations, 43 All- American awards, 44 Reserve All-American awards and 32 Honorable Mention All-Ameri can awards. The farm has had four World Dairy Expo grand champions and won the show’s Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor 15 times. In 1992, Voe geli was awarded the Klussen dorf award and in 1991 he was honored as Dairy Shrine’s Breed er of the Year. Being an annual exhibitor is only one small way Voegeli has supported World Dairy Expo. He was one of World Dairy Expo’s founders, served on the Execu tive Committee and is still a member of the Board of Direc tors. Now Berneta Snider Gable can add the title of World Dairy Expo’s Dairy Woman of the Year to her list of accomplish ments. Gable is the fifth generation to farm the 310-acre century farm. Her husband. Brad Gable, works full time with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, so she is re sponsible for most of the farm’s management decisions and labor, including fieldwork, breeding se lections and record keeping. Her 140-plus Guernsey and Holstein herd includes 18 excel lent cows and consistently ranks in the state’s top 10 herds for production. In the show ring, the herd has generated many awards including several All-Americans and numerous grand and reserve champion and premier breeder and exhibitor honors at the Pennsylvania All-American Dairy Show and the Pennsylva nia Farm Show.
