Sunset Mountains Farm, owned
by Doug and Jenny Lawton and
family, will be the site of the 10th
annual Tioga County Farm City
Day Saturday, July 8.
Farm City Day is a dream
come true for chairperson Sherri
Butters, who wanted to celebrate
the relationship between farm
and nonfarm groups.
“We want to promote a better
understanding of the farmer’s
way of life as well as provide an
opportunity to explore the inter
dependence of farming, the busi
ness community, land use, food
production, and our environ
ment,” said Butters.
Without a host farm, however,
this event could not be possible.

Wellsboro. During the Farm-
City Day event, the farm will be
officially recognized as a Cen
tury Farm. One of the original
tracts of land was purchased in
1887 by Edwin Wilcox, one of
Doug’s ancestors.
After graduating from high
school, Doug began farming with
his parents full time. They even

the herd size grew in number
from 34 to 55 cows and later to
63 cows.
In 1982, Doug married Jenny,
each bringing two children into
the marriage. Scott works full
time on the farm. Sue, Amy, and
Susie, along with four grandchil
dren, all live close by and help on
the farm when needed.
In 1983 Doug and Jenny
began to purchase the farm from
his parents by buying his father’s

In 1993 and 1994, Doug,
Jenny, and Scott also operated a
neighboring farm, bringing the
total number of cows up to 100.
