CATTLE; Compared to last week’s
closing prices, slaughter steers and heif
ers closed 2.00-2.50 lower. The bottom
dropped out of the fat cattle market both
locally and in the Midwest as each day of
trading brought lower prices. It seems
retailers have already stocked their
shelves for next week’s holiday and there
is no driving demand around the corner.
However, live cattle futures for June
have promised these lower price levels
for months. Northern feedlots sold cattle
2.00 lower live and 2.00-3.00 lower
dressed at 67.00 and mostly 107.00, High
Plains feedyards had yet to trade by
Friday morning but seemed destined for
the same. Local Holstein steers traded
mostly 1.50 lower. Slaughter cows sold
mostly steady with last week’s high
levels, but big fleshy cows (less than 85
pet lean) turned 1.00 lower late in the
week. The slaughter bulls continued
