SUN Area Plans June Dairy Festivities
HUMMELS WHARF (Sus
quehanna Co.) SUN Area will
holds its annual dairy festivities
at Susquehanna Mall, June
22-24. The three-day event in
cludes a large variety of activities
including the crowning of a new
SUN Area dairy princess, who
will represent Snyder, Union,
Northumberland, and Montour
Counties.
Thursday’s events include a
4-H Dairy Club milkshake sale
from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.. a cheese
tasting sampling, and an Agri
culture Business Appreciation
Ceremony sponsored by Bos
cov’s.
Twelve dairy maids from
Snyder County will participate in
the pageant program. These in
clude Victoria Adams, Janelle
Ewing, Brittany Fry, Raquel
Hauck, Valerie Hoover, Jessica
Kessler, Brittany Rice, Tara
Rice, Amanda Shaffer, Lad Shi
rey, Corinda Vamer, and Jenni
fer Waite.
Sixteen dairy misses will also
participate in activities. These in
clude Tiffany Adams, Danielle
Ewing, Kasee Ewing, Marissa
Ewing, Amanda Hauck, Eliza
beth Heckert, Lindsay Heckert,
Dawn Hiembach, and Katy
Heimbach from Snyder County;
Crissa Johnson and Cheryl
Pfleegor from Union County;
and Tanya Rice, Hailey Shirey,
Makenzie Walters, Emily Weller,
and Jonelle Wetzel from Snyder
County.
FFA members representing
high schools from Snyder,
Union, Northumberland, and
Montour Counties will also par
ticipate in Dairy Days.
On Friday, Turkey Hill’s giant
ice cream sundae will be made
with 135 gallons of ice cream, 10
gallons of chocolate fudge, 25
pounds pecans, and 5 gallons
cherries. Sundaes and cheese
samples will be offered to the
public.
Saturday, in Boscov’s garden
center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a
petting zoo with calves from six
main dairy breeds will be erected.
A celebrity cow-milking contest
featuring local well-known peo
ple will begin at 1 p.m. under the
tent next to Boscov’s. A new
event this year is a pedal pull
contest for children at 2 p.m,
A Scooper Bowl sponsored by
Swineford Bank will be con
ducted in Boscov's North Court
from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Through
out the day, samples of milk
punch and cheese will be distrib
uted.

Selena Holienbach
Dairy Princess Pageants begins
at 7 p.m. Saturday. Participants
will model fashions from Bos
cov’s during the pageant.
Competing for the crown is
Sarah Erdley, Union County.
She is the daughter of Mike and
Faith Erdley and a senior at Mif
flinburg High School. Sarah is an
active member of 4-H, FFA, and
the bowling team. She enjoys
showing dairy cattle, public
speaking, being president of local
4-H and FFA organizations, and
judging dairy cattle.
Sarah owns four dairy animals
and works on the family farm,
where they raise 350 acres of
corn, soybeans, and alfalfa. She
has one brother. After gradua
tion, Sarah plans to attend Lara
mie County College to study
rodeo and beef production.
Another contestant, Selena
Hollenbach from Snyder County
is the daughter of Scott and
Sandy Hollenback. A senior at
Selinsgrove High School, Selena
is active in FFA and enjoys
showing and judging dairy ani
mals. She works on the family
farm where they raise 110 dairy
animals and corn and hay. Ten
of the dairy animals belong to
Selena. She has a brother Scott
and a sister Sabrina.
Another contestant is Melinda
Wolfe, Northumberland County.
She is the daughter of Dean and
Rinda Wolfe. Melinda will be a
sophomore at Bloomsburg Uni
versity where she will study ele
mentary education. Some of Me
linda's activities include band,
drama club, concert choir, stu-

dent council, National Honor So
ciety, softball, and yearbook
staff. She enjoys being a Red
Cross volunteer and a Milton
Little League volunteer and as
sistant coach.
Melinda is employed full time
during the summer at Hacken
berg’s Apiaries. Her family owns
and operates Wolfe’s Power Line
Dairy, where Melinda works part
time with the 485 dairy animals
and crop farms 300 acres of al
falfa and corn. Melinda has a
brother Randy and sister Dean
na.
