UNIVERSITY PARK
(Centre Co.) Responding to
proposed K-12 academic stand
ards that call for integrated pest
management (IPM) to be taught
as part of units on the environ
ment and ecology, the Pennsyl
vania IPM Program is offering a
course to help teachers incorpo
rate IPM into their curriculum.
IPM aims to control pests
such as insects, diseases, weeds
and animals by combining
physical, biological and chemi
cal tactics that are safe, profita

“The course will provide the
basis for teaching IPM concepts
in the classroom, as well as
indoor and outdoor activities to
demonstrate real-world pest
management decision-making
skills,” said Lyn Garling, educa

“IPM combines information
about pest identity, biology, and
population growth with the use
of multiple tactics to prevent or
manage pest problems if neces
sary,” said Garling. “IPM activ
ities are well suited for hands-on
learning that cuts across the cur
riculum, from biology, chemis
try, and ecology to math and
statistics.”
Garling will team-teach the
course with Kerry Richards of
Penn State’s Pesticide Educa
tion Program. For more infor

Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 3, 2000-A29
Workshop For
Dairy Grazers
New Zealand and also by many
dairy grazers here in the U.S.
Swing parlors can be a lower
cost alternative for dairy farm
ers who might not have the re
sources for a conventional
parlor development. They are
extremely efficient and capable
of milking a large number of
cows very quickly.
The featured
speaker will be Vance
Haugen from the Uni
versity of Wisconsin
extension. Haugen has
worked extensively
with dairy farmers in
Wisconsin to plan and
build swing parlors,
often installing them
in older stanchion
bams.
Other speakers will
be Dean Bell from
Waikato Milking Sys
tems; Doug Parker,
grazing consultant
from Williston, Ver
mont; and Ron Geek,
a dairy farmer from
Cambridge, New Zea
land.
Glenn Moyer, Dave
Rice, Duane Hertzler,
and Phil Risser
farmers who have
built swing parlors in
the last two years
will participate in a
panel discussion to
share their insights on
parlor development.
The program will
run from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. Participants are
invited to stay after
the workshop for af
ternoon milking in
Cove Mt. Farm’s 16-
unit swing parlor at 4
p.m.
Advance registra
tion for the workshop
is not required; how
ever, box lunches will
be available only to
those who call prior to
June 20.
Cost for lunch is $5
per person, payable
the day of the work
shop. Workshop spon
sors include American
Farmland Trust,
Pennsylvania Associa
tion for Sustainable
Agriculture, USDA-
Natural Resources
Conservation Service,
and Franklin County
Graziers.
For more informa
tion or to reserve a box
lunch, call (717) 328-
4400. Cove Mt. Farm
is located on Rt. 456 in
Franklin County, nine
miles south of Rt. 16.
The farm is just seven
miles north of Rt. 70
and the Maryland
state line. From Rt. 70,
take exit 5, head north
on Hollow Rd. and
turn right on Rt. 456
once you’ve crossed
into Pennsylvania.
