CATTLE Compared to Thursday,
slaughter steers and heifers sold weak on
Mondayand then turned 50-1 00 lower by
the end of Tuesday's auction Buyers were
determined to work prices lower and the
plain offering did not offer any help A
light lest of Holstein steers sold steady to
50 lower Slaughter cows were uneven,

CATTLE: Compared to Tuesday,
slaughter steers and a thin test of slaugh
ter heifers sold .50 to mostly 1.00 higher
with late sales as much as 1.50 higher.
Prices ended the week firm to 1.00
higher than last Thursday. Supply was
fairly light, but very high in quality and
enabled the market to recover from early
week losses. Holstein steer prices re
mained mostly steady. The slaughter
cows sold weak to 1.00 lower and an out
standing run of slaughter bulls sold firm.
Supply included 49 pet slaughter steers
and 30 pet cows.

CALVES; There was no comparison
for veal prices from Monday’s light run.
The market for Holstein bulls returning
to feed was slow and prices were sharply
lower. Many local producers were not
participating because of the religious
holiday. Bull calves sold 50.00-60.00
lower than Monday’s thin test, but Hol
stein heifers trended steady to 35.00
higher. Supply included 250 head in the
state graded sale and 92 percent re
turned to feed.

between early and late week market con
ditions was like night and day. Buyers
wanted to continue the downward trend
after last week’s losses, but good demand
on Thursday from the few small packers
left in the area pushed prices well above
last week’s levels. The current local
supply of finished cattle is too light to
allow lower prices in the auction mar
kets with both small and arge packers
competing for the sa or cattle. Western
feeders managed iu sell their cattle
steady this week at 69.00-69.50 and
110.00-111.00. Local Holstein steer trad
ing was fairly slow and prices ended
steady to .50 lower. Slaughter cows
closed steady to 1.00 lower, with the full
decline on the fleshier types (less than 85
pet lean). A good test of slaughter bulls
sold firm. Supply included 45 percent
slaughter steers, 7 percent slaughter
heifers, 38 percent slaughter cows, 6 per
cent slaughter bulls, with the balance
feeders.
