Losses came progres sively over the week, with the lightest demand on Thursday. A reduced holi day schedule for packers weighed heav ily on all slaughter classes late in the week. Limited Western trade through Friday morning was mostly 2.00 lower at 69.00- live and as much as 4.00 lower dressed from 110.00-111.00. Post holiday beef demand will tell whether the cattle market is merely correcting itself or if we are in for much lower prices for the summer. Many analysts project the latter; but feedlots are very current and with the start of barbecue season, consumer demand for beef is the best it has been for 20 years. Local Hol stein steers ended the week 1.00-2.00 lower and heifers closed 1.50-2.00 lower. Slaughter cows finished mostly 1.50 lower with late-week losses and slaugh ter bulls ended steady to 1.00 lower. Supply included 46 percent slaughter steers, 7 percent slaughter heifers, 35 percent slaughter cows, 5 percent slaughter bulls, with the balance feeders.
