Two candidates, Heather Crowl and Holly Rankin will vie for the honor to represent York County as dairy princess for the upcom ing milk promotion year. Heather and Holly, along with several younger candidates for the county’s milk promotion team, will be the features of the 2000 York County Dairy Prin cess pageant, beginning at 7:30 p.m. May 27 at the York 4-H Center. Heather, 18, is the daughter of Joyce and Ellis Crowl, McCall’s Ferry Road, Airville. She will graduate in June from Red Lion Area High School and plans to pursue a medical assistant course of study at the York towne Business Institute to pre pare for a career working in the private medical practice field. A long-time cattle show en thusiast who owns 20 head, most of them Milking Shorthorns, Heather is active in both the Milk and Money Dairy 4-H club and the Red Lion FFA chapter. In addition to working with her cows, Heather enjoys country line dancing. The Crowl family’s operation includes 70 head of milking cows and 275 acres cropped to corn, hay, soybeans, wheat and barley. Holly, 17, is the daughter of Jon and Sharon Rankin, Belle vue Road, Red Lion. A junior at Red Lion Area High School, Holly plans to study agriculture following her graduation in 2001, majoring in dairy or ag business. Holly is employed at Perrydell Dairy Farms, where she helps with milking the 120 head at the producer-processor operation, as well as mixing feed, breeding cows, and assisting with field work. She shows dairy cows in the 4-H and FFA programs and plays high school soccer. Holly enjoys participating in rodeos and is a fan of music and danc ing. Three daughters of the Daniel and Lori Baumgardner family, West Barrens Church Road, Dillsburg, will take part in the pageant to select the county’s dairy promotion court. Heather Baumgardner, 16, is a dairy ambassador candidate. She is home schooled and will complete her studies for high school graduation as a senior in 2001. Among the activities Heather enjoys are Bible quizzing, play ing the piano, and participating in mission work and trips through the family’s church af filiation. At the Baumgardner family’s Barrens View Farm, Heather helps with the variety of chores involved in tending 60 milking cows and 130 acres of corn, alfalfa, mixed hay and barley. HEATMOR Stainless Steel Amy Baumgardner is 9 and a candidate for dairy miss. She is in third-grade homeschooled studies and pitches in with the rest of the family for farm chores, helping to milk and feed the young stock. Amy enjoys studying sire books with her dad, and helping to select mating bulls. One of her favorite animals on the farm is her own calf, Sam. Little dairy miss candidate Kathryn “Katie” Baumgardner is 5 and in first-grade studies. Katie also helps with the Bar rens View milking herd, includ ing lending a hand at calf feeding time. She especially looks forward to feeding the farm’s kittens. A second dairy miss candi date who is fond of tending the farm’s kittens is Amber Thoman, 6. The daughter of Gail and Gary Thoman, Dun kard Valley Road, Dallastown, Amber is a kindergarten student at Loganville Elementary School. She enjoys playing with the calves from the dairy herd, as well as practicing with them for show ring competition when she is a little older. Along with the upcoming pageant, the county milk pro motion committee is raising funds from the dairy industry and agribusiness supports to help support the young ladies’ public awareness efforts. State Dairy Princess PARMESAN HERB BREAD 1 loaf unsliced Italian bread Vi cup butter, melted 1 clove garlic, minced 1 teaspoon dried basil, crushed Vi teaspoon dried oregano, crushed Vi teaspoon dried sage, crushed Vi cup parmesan cheese Cut bread into Vi-inch slices, cutting to but not through the bot tom of the loaf. Combine butter, garlic, basil, oregano, and sage; brush on bread slices and on top of loaf. Sprinkle bread slices and top of loaf with cheese. Wrap in heavy foil. Place in center of cooking grill.
