The 18- year-old daughter of Diane Shirk, Lititz, fell in love with exotic animals by visiting zoos all over the area. Desiree said she has visited the Philadel phia Zoo and zoos in Hershey, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and many aquariums. Desiree said that the polar bear exhibit at the Philadelphia Zoo appealed to her. “I spent a lot of time in Philly,” she said. She watched “Yogi Bear” TV cartoons a lot. And she pointed to watching black bears at a family cabin in Snow Shoe. Desiree also attributes her de cision to watching a veterinarian help Nikki, a Gordon Setter, who passed away after her last litter. Desiree wants to major in animal science at Delaware Valley College. Del Val ap pealed to her because of its animal science curriculum. Scholarship recipient Ryan Wimer looked into several col leges. The 18-year-old son of Raymond Wimer, Quarryville, selected a career path in equine management and looked at sev eral colleges. Ryan believes that Del Val is too small and Penn State is too big. He finally chose the Univer sity of Delaware with the help of the company he has worked for several years, Hilltop Farms, Colora, Md., a “very well-to-do sport horse and breeding center,” Ryan said Ryan will study animal sci ence at the university with a focus on ag marketing. Lynn, senior at Solanco High School and 10-year Lancaster County 4-H Strawberry Club member, said he has “always been interested in plants.” He spent some time trying to grow a Passion flower, but couldn’t get the seeds to germinate. Lynn noted the lack of germi nation could be blamed on im proper heating. The flowers have to be kept at a temperature of 100 degrees for three weeks. Lynn, who plans to enroll in Penn State to study horticulture, kept his focus on ornamental horticulture in high school and “took advanced everything,” he said, with a focus on horticul ture.
