Cattle Calves Sheep Goats
THURSDAY
CATTLE: Compared to Tuesday, a
good run of slaughter steers and heifers
sold 50-1.00 lower and closed weak to .50
lower than last week. Steer demand con
tinues to be good, but the large offering
allowed buyers to be patient and more
particular as to weight condition and cu
lability. The Holstein steer market was
steady. A fairly light run of slaughter
cows sold steady to 1.00 higher and a
good test of slaughter bulls sold fully
steady. Supply included 50 percent
slaughter steers and 30 percent slaughter
cows.

auction; there was not a comparison for
a veal market test, but demand was
much improved from last week. Larger
slaughter calves sold steady to 5.00
higher. Holstein bulls returning to feed
sold 5.00-IS.OO lower, but trading was
more active than mid-week. The
demand for Holstein heifers was much
lighter and prices dipped 10.00-20.00
lower. Supply included 362 head in the
state graded sale and 91 percent re
turned to feed.

CATTLE: Compared to last week’s
closing prices, slaughter steers and heif
ers closed weak to .50 lower after selling
slightly higher at midweek. Prices held
up fairly well this week considering
downside pressure. Dressed beef prices
turned lower this week and the spot fu
tures market for Choice steers is near the
68.00 level. Local demand was good and
the Northeastern market continues at a
nice premium to the Western market,
which closed steady to 1.00 lower at
mostly 71.00-71.50 and 113.00-115.00
dressed. The Holstein steer market was
active and closed .50 higher. A light
week’s run of slaughter cows sold 1.00-
2.00 higher and slaughter bulls ended
fully steady. Supply included 59 percent
slaughter steers, 8 percent slaughter
heifers, 32 percent slaughter cows, 6 per
cent slaughter bulls, with the balance
feeders.
