Jamestown Settled
May 14, 1607, marked the arrival of the Virginia
Company charter settlement in Jamestown,
Virginia. A group of 500 or so followed Captain
John Smith to the New World. Smith stayed two years
to help establish the British settlement. By 1609, howev
er, he had moved along to other explorations and, by
winter’s end, the Jamestown
crew had dwindled to 60.
Winters were hard, supplies
scarce, relations with the
Algonquians unstable. By
one account, at least, the “idle
aristocrats and ne’er-do-wells” that came to settle
Jamestown didn’t have what it took without Smith’s
leadership.
Who comes earliest leaJs the way.
