New Directors are Tim Livings EPA Approves Protein WASHINGTON, D.C. —The Envrionmental Protection Agency (EPA) gave its approval to a protein product that switches on a plant’s natural de fenses against disease and in sects. The first-of-its-kind protein is viewed as an alterna tive to chemicals. The protein, produced from genetically engineered bacteria, has been shown in field testing to increase yields for tomatoes and peppers by up to 22 percent and make plants more tolerant of drought. Known by the trade name Messenger, it’s one of a growing number of “biopesticides” that either trigger or strengthen plants’ natural defenses or con tain microbes that attack the pests.
