Shenk started the bus making
project in the fall and worked on
it evenings whenever it fit into
his schedule.
Shenk has no plans to retire.
He said, “I like my grandchil
dren (he has seven) and my bus
children. I miss both the chil
dren and the driving during the
summer months.”
His wife said, “He really has
patience. I marvel at how he
handles problems.”
“You must be a little of a lot
of different people—mother,
father, pastor, nurse, and psy
chiatrist,” Shenk said of bus
drivers.
He often finds conversing
with his bus children a bit amus
ing. One 6-year old reported it
was his dad’s birthday. When
Shenk inquired how old his
father was, the child replied, “I
think 11.”
His questions aren’t always
answered as he expects. Once he
asked a little girl what she was
going to do when she grew up.
She answered, “I don’t know,
but I do know I like you.”
Bidding on the hand-carved
wooden school bus begins at 11
a.m.
The auction begins Friday,
May 12, with a craft show and
quilt preview at 4 p.m. A south
ern-style all-you-can-eat pig
roast will be served 4:30 p.m. to
7:30 p.m.
An antiques and collectible
Shenk, who thrives on challenges, has won numerous
trophies in the Lancaster/Lebanon School Bus Rodeo.
