Penn State Dairy Science Club Celebrates JAYNE SEBRIGHT Lancaster Farming Staff STATE COLLEGE (Centre Co.) About 30 Penn State stu dents participated in this year’s Dairy Exposition Fitting & Showing Contest, held at the Penn State Ag Arena last Satur day. Show exhibitors were divided into three categories, amatuer, intermediate, and professional, based on their level of showing and fitting experience. Within Steve Paiveski was named this year’s overall champion of the Penn State Dairy Expo sition Fitting & Showing Contest, while Tom Über received reserve overall champion. each division, participants were divided into classes of four and judge on both their showing and fitting abilities. In each division, the winners of each class com peted for champion fitter and champion showman. In the professional division, Steve Palveski, a senior from Gibson, received both champion fitter and champion showman. Tom Über was named reserve champion fitter and reserve champion showman. Palveski was also named overall cham pion fitter, showman, and over all champion, while Über received reserve overall cham- pion fitter, showman, and over all champion. Michelle Cornman earned both champion fitter and cham pion showman in the intermedi ate division. Reserve champion fitter and reserve champion showman both went to Mary Bamford. In the amateur division, Ellen Angstadt was named champion fitter and reserve champion showman. Judges for this year’s show were John “Andy” Foster 111 and Terri Packard. Foster is a 1994 graduate from Penn State and a former Dairy Expo show chairperson. He currently works with his family on Globe-Run Farm and serves as the Central and Western Pennsylvania Ter ritory Manager for Taurus Ser vice, Inc. Packard graduated from Penn State in 1993 and was also a Dairy Expo show manager. She was named overall cham- Penn State Dairy Science Club Celebrates 75th Dairy Expo (Continued from Page A 1) one dairy science club in the country for the past several years. “I have visited many clubs throughout the United States and can really appreciate what it means to be number one,” said Rumler. “You young people have come to expect it, but I can really appreciate it, which makes me all the more honored to have received this award.” David Lentz, a 1994 graduate from Penn State, received this year’s Young Dairy Leader award. Lentz served as club president, Dairy Expo chairper son, and Nittany Lion Fall Clas sic chair while he was a student at Penn State. He also received both the Davey Award, pre sented to the outstanding senior, and the Branding Award, pre sented to the outstanding junior. Since graduation, Dave has worked as a regional representa tive for Holstein Association USA, Inc. He provides programs to members and non-members in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Vir ginia, Delaware, and West Vir ginia. He has also completed training in the Holstein Founda tion’s Young Dairy Leaders In stitute. Lentz thanked his many men tors who were in the audience at the banquet. He also attribute some of his success to Penn State’s great Ivanhoe Star bull. “When my parents went out of the dairy business in 1987, it was my Ivanhoe Star daughter, Katie, who kept my interest in dairy and got me where I am today,” said Lentz. Many students were recog nized during the awards pro gram. Heather Oberholtzer, a senior from Elizabethtown, re ceived this year’s William R. Davey award, presented to the outstanding senior in the club, Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 22, 2000-A2l pion of the Dairy Expo show in 1991. Currently Terri is involved in marketing, raising, and show ing dairy cattle and owns a small business. During the Expo show and other events, the club hosted a silent auction to benefit club ac tivities. Old show memorabilia items having sentimental value to Penn State alumni were sold during the auction. The highest selling item was silver platter from the Pennsylvania Ayrshire Association honoring former judging team achievements. The platter went for $5,000. and was named as Penn State’s nominee for the National Dairy Shrine recognition program. This year’s August E. Brand ing award went to Curtis Beidel of Newburg. The award is pre sented to an outstanding junior who unselfishly gives their time and abilities to helping others and the club. Josh Hushon of Airville was named the Out standing First Year Member of the club. Awards were presented to stu dents who served as chairper sons for the various events and activities that the club hosts during the year. After each award was presented, club presi dent Diane Clock asked past chairs to highlight some memo ries from when they were in the club. Graduating seniors were also recognized during the meeting. “We come together as always to celebrate the accomplishments of our seniors,” said Muller. “This year’s list of seniors is one of the longest we have had.” Seniors graduating this spring include Victoria Ansell, Barbara Berrang, Lauren Lynch, Roberta McConnell, Jill Middour, Ashante Morgan, Todd Morris, Jolene Nicoletto, Heather Ob erholtzer, Steve Palveski, Chris tina Peterson, Melissa Rhoads, Sarah Rodriquez, Heather Slee man, Kerry Snyder, Jameson Walker, Andrew Wilcox, and Janice Youse. Summer and December grad uates are Allen Behrer, Tia Crider, Rebecca Fry, Colin Gil lette, Diane Clock, Tara Godshall, Noah Hughes, Fred Lundy, Darren Martin, Rachel McCutcheon, Peter Posnett, Me lissa Rhoads, Dan Theodori, and Danielle Vitanza.
