Advancement Teams to Visit
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) -
Agriculture Secretary Samuel E.
Hayes Jr. announced that teams of
state and federal agriculture officials
and inspectors will visit all
Pennsylvania stone fruit growers over
the next two months through the
Plum Pox Virus Surveillance and
Eradication Program.
“Sampling and testing stone fruit
trees is the first step in eradicating the
plum pox virus (PPV) in
Pennsylvania,” Hayes said. “As part
of our continuing efforts to contain
the newly discovered plum pox virus,
we will test all orchards in the quar
antine area twice during this year’s
growing season and all other stone
fruit orchards across Pennsylvania at
least once this year.”
Hayes said the purpose of the vis
its by state officials and inspectors
from the federal Animal Plant Health
Inspection Service will be to leant
from growers the locations, acreage,
and other vital information about
orchard blocks to be surveyed.
The information will be gathered
by a Geographical Information
System using aerial photography to
produce maps for subsequent state

PPV affects stone-bearing fruits,
including plums, peaches, nectarines,
and apricots. The disease is charac
terized by round spots (pox) on fruit,
leaves, stems, and seeds. It does not
kill trees, but makes fruit unmar
ketable and drastically decreases
yields.
PPV is transmitted from infected
trees by aphids or by grafting. The
disease does not affect humans. The
strain detected in Pennsylvania is not
transmitted in the fruit’s seed.
First described in East Europe in
1910, PPV has spread to most coun
tries on the European continent and to
at least one country in South
America. This is the first time PPV
has been detected in North America.
Pennsylvania is a leading produc
er of fruit, ranking fourth nationally
in peaches. Adams County is
Pennsylvania's leading fruit-produc
ing country. In 1999, the value of
Pennsylvania’s stone fruit production
was approximately $25 million.
