other fajm-related enterprises
such as custom work, truck dri
ving and seed or supply sales.
According to the survey, 58.5
percent of the respondents start
ed farming or ranching as a
member of a family partnership,
while 19.3 percent started on
their own. While 13.6 percent
said marriage led them to farm,
only 8.6 percent reported that
they inherited their farm or
ranch.
When quizzed about their
opinions regarding the public’s
attitude toward farmers and
ranchers, 42.3 percent said they
thought the public would weigh
in positively, 23.5 percent said
the public would respond nega-

Just 69.7 percent of the
respondents said they were bet
ter off financially than they
were five years ago - the lowest
mark in survey history.
Optimism also hit a survey
record low, as just 52.9 percent
(59.2 percent in 1999) said they
are more optimistic about farm
ing than they were five years
ago.
Despite those numbers, more
of the young farmers said they
planned on being farmers for
life, 94.2 percent compared to
last year’s 92 percent. Fewer,
however, (90.2 percent) said they
would like to see their children
follow in their footsteps, com
pared to last year’s 91.7 percent
