UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) - “Where’s the Beef 9 ” That
question was easy to answer for those
who attended the 2000 PA Beef
Expo, March 31-April 2 This year,
Pennsylvania Junior Cattlemen’s
Association (PJCA) members from
six states came together to compete in
one of the biggest Expo junior shows
to date.
Held at the Penn State
Agricultural Arena in State College,
the 11th Annual PA Beef Expo junior
show was judged by John and JoAnn
Housner of Dover. The junior heifer
show began Saturday, April 1, at 3
p.m. with record attendance and qual
ity animals Eight breeds competed
for overall grand champion heifer
The champion Angus heifer, owned
by CA Detwiler of Roaring Spring,
was named overall grand champion
heifer. Reserve champion overall
heifer was exhibited by Dakon Moore
of Hookstown, with his Shorthorn
Heifer.

Luke Phipps.
The Junior Steer Show boasted
record numbers this year with 154
steers competing for grand champion
steer. When the dust settled, the ban
ner went to Ashley Vosloh of Mt.
Airy, MD, with her champion heavy
weight steer. Chelsea Weiben of
Leesburg, VA exhibited the reserve
overall champion steer.

steer-Robert Harper, Uniontown.
Reserve champion lightweight steer-
Lynn Weimer, New Alexandria.
Champion middleweight steer-Gwen
competed in the annual PA Beef
Expo Skillathon and the PA Beef
Expo Quiz Bowl challenge.
PJCA members lined up Saturday
morning, April 1, to compete in this
year’s Beef Skillathon. Coordinated
by the Penn State Block and Bridle
Club, the Skillathon was an excellent
opportunity for young beef enthusi
asts to test their beef industry knowl
edge. From 8:00-10:00 a.m., 67
PJCA members raced against the .
clock to complete seven different
mini-learning stations, including
Feed ID and Food Safety.
After all of the questions had been
answered, and the points tallied, the
top individuals and teams were
announced. Top individual in the
senior division was Ben Weist from
Berks County. The highest-ranking
senior team rallied from York County.
In the intermediate division, top indi
vidual honor went to Cathy Levan of
Berks County. Cathy was also a
member of the Berks County team,
which posted the highest overall team
score in the intermediate division.
Jennifer Shultz of York County was
named as the top individual in the
junior division, helping her junior
team secure a first place finish.
The following are the top three
individuals in each division: Senior
Division-Ben Weist, Berks County;
Sarah Lohman, Virginia; Casey Poor,
Centre County. Intermediate
Division-Cathy Levan, Berks
County; Debbie McAllister, Centre
County; Kyle Grim, York County.
Junior Division-Jenmfer Shultz,
York County; Kim Long, York
County; Kurt Long, York County
The Beef Expo Quiz Bowl chal
lenge began Saturday morning, April
1, with the preliminaries. Teams from
across the region competed, answer
ing question on topics such as nutri
tion, genetics, and reproduction.
Competition continues after the pre
liminaries at the Quiz Bowl Finale.
This year’s Senior Quiz Bowl
champions were Berks Country Team
2. Members of the team are Kristy
Dietrich, Cathy Levan, Emilie Miller,
and Nick Strause. The Junior Quiz
Bowl champion team was York
County Team 1, juniors Richard
Heineman, Kim Long, Tina Brown,
and Jennifer Shultz.
The Beef Skillathon and Quiz
Bowl challenge are held every year in
conjunction with the PA Beef Expo
