Dairy Prices Head Lower ■Blocks and barrels trade lower ■February cheese production up 2.9 percent Cheddar cheese enters the CCC Cheese prices showed further weakness this week at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Barrel cheese prices fell from $1.0850 per pound on Monday, April 3 to $1.0775 on Friday, April 7. Likewise, prices for 40- pound blocks fell from $1.1125 per pound on Monday to $1.1075 by Friday. Just two carloads of cheese at the exchange actually traded hands this week. That report shows American-type cheese production in February 2000 at 297.4 million pounds. Adjusted for leap year, that would be an increase of 3.5 percent. Total cheese production in February 2000 was 639.6 million pounds, up 2.9 percent when adjusted for leap year.
