To Boost Ethanol,
PARK Ridge, 111. - Farmers may
soon be getting incentives to produce
more crops for ethanol and bio-based
fuels,
A plan to provide several hundred
million dollars in incentive payments
to bioenergy producers was
announced at the same time as a
Clinton Administration plan to phase
out the use of MTBE in gasoline
Ethanol production needs to
increase to replace the MTBE which
is added to gasoline in some areas of
the country to help gasoline bum
more cleanly The change comes
because MTBE has contaminated
water supplies and has been identi
fied as a threat to public health.

of the Clinton administration’s initia
tive to increase the demand for com
modities and provide farmers with
more income
The ethanol industry has grown
from 100 million gallons m 1981 to
almost 1.5 billion gallons in 1989,
Glickman said. More than 5 percent
of U.S. corn production, or 550 mil
lion bushels, is used every year to
produce ethanol, according to
Glickman.

“Rural income will rise as farm
income increases and new jobs will
be created by new ethanol plans,” he
said.
In announcing the phaseout of
MTBE, Environmental Protection
Agency Administrator Carol Browner
said use of the chemical posed a
potential public health threat. “We’re
not yet at a crisis stage, but we have a
real concern,” Browner said.
The administration wants
Congress to amend the Clean Air Act
to reduce or eliminate use of methyl
tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), but set
no time frame for elimination of the
additive.
