The market quickly opened 1.00 lower on Monday, but found firm ground to stand on at that point. Trad ing turned active on Tuesday and con tinued through the week, with the strongest market of the week coming on Thursday’s late cattle. The Western feedlot trade seemed destined for weak ness early in the week, but cattlemen showed their leverage over packers as they held out for steady money with no help from the futures or dressed beef markets. Midwestern slaughter cattle closed steady, instances .50-1.00 higher in the Northern areas at 72.00-72.50 live and 115.00-116.00 dressed. Local Hol stein steer prices finished steady to 1.00 higher with an outstanding offering sparking interest on Thursday. Slaugh ter cows trended uneven, with fleshy cows ending weak to .50 lower and leaner types (over 85 pet lean) closing .50-1.00 higher. Slaughter bulls ended the week 1.00 lower. Supply included 49 percent slaughter steers, 5 percent slaughter heifers, 32 percent slaughter cows, 5 percent bulls, with the balance feeders.
