On March 21, 1959, “Alvin’s Harmonica,” by the
Chipmunks, became one of the chart toppers for high- [
selling records. Singer, songwriter, and Chipmunk ere- 1
ator, Ross Bagdasarian had used his recording device gim- i
micks previously in his popular song, “Witch Doctor ”
From that success, he followed his children’s advice in ;
creating the chipmunk characters Alvin (the leader),
Simon (the scholar), and Theodore (who loved to eat)
Soon, his Chipmunks were recording their
own albums, with Bagdasanan’s alias,
“Dave Seville,” as their mentor. Their
“Chipmunk Song” (Christmas Don’t Be
Late) sold 5 million copies in just seven
weeks. Alvin's television cartoon show
followed in 1961 and continues today
Bagdasarian died in 1972
