ceiving a $650 savings bond.
The club recognized one first
year member with a
plaque-Erik Long, New Oxford.
4-H Beef Club leaders were

The highlight of the evening
was Trick Roping presented by
J.R. Myers, Felton, and Shane
Kuhn, Gettysburg, and the slide
show featuring the 1999 4-H
Beef Club activities by Darlene
Resh.
The evening concluded with
Charles Sherman thanking the
buyers for their dedicated sup
port of the 4-H program. Chris
Jeffcoat closed the evening by
thanking buyers, club members,
leaders, and friends for coming.
The Banquet Committee was
applauded for organizing a
great event. Committee mem
bers were Bert Martin, Chair;
Cami Topper, Candice Flick
inger, Lee Seymore, Justin
Diehl, Janel Keller, Chris Jeff
coat, Mary Lynn Martin, Karol
Sherman, Judy Stine, Lois Sey

Cumberland County 4-H
The Cumberland County
Wide 4-H Dairy Club meeting
was held on February 14, 2000,
with President Thomas Har
wood calling the meeting to
order at 7:39 p.m.
The 4-H pledge was led by lan
Stamy, and the Pledge of Alle
giance was led by Tori Fuller.
Sarah Day, recording secretary,
called roll by asking the ques
tion, “What is your favorite time
or season of the year?” The club
welcomed new member Mariah
Paynter. Sarah Day read the
minutes of the December meet
ing, which were approved as
read.
Under old business Amy
Kaucher gave a County Council
report. Everyone that went to
the PA Farm Show told how
they did. Amy Kulick added,
“that the Cumberland County
Quiz Bowl Team got second
there.” The president asked for
anyone that went to the PA Jr.
Holstein Convention to tell
something about the weekend
and what they did there. The
Dairy Bowl Team placed
second.
Also under old business, Mari
lyn Zinn gave the club a report
on the process of the parade
West Snyder FFA Chapter
National FFA Week was cele
brated at West Snyder High
School during the week of
George Washington’s Birthday.
FFA placemats were given to
Rayauda’s, Hunters’ and
Camps’ Family Restaurants to
use during National FFA Week.
Jen McWilliams and Heather
Hollenbach recorded radio spots
for Big Country Radio, Sel
insgrove, while Kate Heeter,
Phaedra Wray, and Jen McWil
liams recorded promotional
spots for WLSZ radio, Beaver
Springs.
A proclamation was signed by
the Snyder County Commis
sioners to declare February 19-
26 “FFA Week in Snyder
County.” Jennifer McWilliams,
SUN Area and West Snyder
FFA Chapter President and
Heidi Good, Snyder County
FFA Vice President were on
hand for the signing of the proc
lamation.
The FFA Chapter scrapbook
was displayed at a different
business each week in February.
These businesses included First
National Trust Bank, Beaver
town, Keystone Financial Bank
and Swineford National Bank in
Beaver Springs, and B&R Farm
Equipment in Beavertown.
On Monday, February 21,
Chapter Vice Presidents, Kate
Heeter, Jessica Walter, and
Heidi Good, made a special
presentation to the Mid-West
School Board to say thank you
for the support they have given
them over the past year. An as
sembly for all eighth grade stu
dents at West Snyder High
School was also held to inform
them of FFA opportunities.
Faculty and staff received a
float. She also told the club that
she received a letter from the
parade committee. She said the
trailer will be 48 feet long. Amy
Kulick also mentioned that the
club could keep the trailer at her
grandparents’ home.
Under new business, Presi
dent Thomas Harwood an
nounced that there is officer
training on April 3, at 7:00 p.m.,
at Grace United Methodist
Church. Donald Harwood told
everyone about dairy judging.
He announced when the group
will practice and where and
when the contest is.
Kathy Walton announced
when the leaders meeting will
be. The meeting will be held on
March 2. She also announced
about the district shows meet
ings.
After new business was done,
Brandon Kendrick gave a dem
onstration on Wayne Gretzky.
The program for the evening
was the Hoard’s Dairyman
Judging contest. Kathy Walton
had the club count off and split
into groups. Each group judged
five (5) classes of cows. When
every group was done, and con
siderable discussion was held,
Kathy asked each group what
their placings were for each
class of cows. As a group, the
club decided on the placing of
each class.
No meeting will be held in
March due to the banquet on
March 13 at New Hope Church
Annex at 7:00 p.m.
West Snyder FFA highlighter
compliments of the FFA Chap
ter, was served cherry pie and
ice cream with the homemade
pies made by members’ mothers,
and were invited to complete an
FFA quiz. Cookbooks were
awarded as prizes to the
winners.
Throughout the week, many
events occurred in the school. A
large FFA emblem was dis
played in the main lobby, a dis
play was set up at the main
entrance, and a display case was
decorated in the hall.
On February 4-6, West
Snyder FFA Chapter entered
fifty-one enterprises from forty
three members in the state FFA
record keeping contest. West
Snyder members came home
with forty-five state medals.
Twenty-four of these medals
were gold medals. Chuck Kes
sler, Heather Hollenbach,
Hannah Etzler, and Jodi Fet
terolf won gold medals in swine
finishing. Gold medal winners in
on-farm employment include
Jennifer McWilliams, Melissa
McWilliams, Kate Heeter, Jason
Wray, Chuck Kessler, Amanda
Shaffer, Brandon Heckman,
Jessica Walter, Jessica Cather
man, and Kevin Walter.

Briggs, Andrew Kreamer, Tif
fany Esbenshade, and Phaedra
Wray. Sandy Opdyke, Jennifer
McWilliams, Melissa McWilli
ams, and Amanda Shaffer
earned gold medals in dairy
herd. Other gold medal winners
included Heidi Good in pleasure
horse while Brandon Heckman
earned a gold medal in corn for
grain.

sylvania FFA Safety Challenge
contest at the Pennsylvania
Farm Show Wednesday, Jan. 12.

medicine sweatshirts. The event
was sponsored by the Pennsyl
vania Department of Agricul
ture. The Safety Challenge used
the academic college bowl for
mat to quiz students on their
knowledge of farm safety and
occupational health issues.
Members had to “buzz in” and
answer the question within 15
seconds on various safety and
health topics. A random drawing
faced West Snyder FFA against
Penn Manor FFA from Lan
aster County in the semifinal
round. They defeated Penn Man
or by a score of 150-45. They
faced Mifflinburg FFA Chapter
