The Northwest Lancaster County 4-H Dairy Club will hold its reorganizational meet ing on Monday, March 6, at the Elizabethtown Area Community Center (the former Poplar Street Elementary School). The meet ing will begin at 7:30 p.m. During the meeting, members will go over the Hoard’s Dairy man Judging Contest. Jared Hillegass was first in the One-Acre Corn Growing Contest with 185 bushels of shelled corn per acre. The following received state pins for their achievements at Penn State FFA Activities Week last summer; Justin Van Gilder, Prepared FFA Public Speaking; Stephanie Hartman, Junior Public Speaking; and David Bittner, State Delegate. Chapter Scrapbook gold medal winners included team members Adam Coleman, Matt Webreck, David Bittner, and Stephanie Hartman. Matthew Coleman, son of Philip and Lee Ann Coleman, received the American FFA Degree. Lancaster Co. Rabbit Club A new 4-H Club called the Rabbit Club was recently orga nized, with the first meeting held on February 28 at the Centerville Lutheran Parish Hall. The club elected new officers, including President Madison Miller, Vice President Crystal Lehman, Secretary Jeanette Bouch, Social Chairpersons Caleb Burkholder and Eli Fulton, and News Reporter Jeanette Bouch. During the meeting, the club discussed different uses for rab bits, good and bad qualities of rabbits, and where to purchase the rabbits. Members also com pleted a rabbit body parts cross wood puzzle. The next meeting will be held on March 27 at the Centerville Lutheran Parish Hall at 7 p.m. Plans are to leam the proper handling of a rabbit. Cumberland Co. Sheep Club On February 17, the Conodo guinet 4-H Sheep Club met for the first time this year at the Cumberland Co. Extension Office. The club elected new officers for the year 2000. They are Sonya Rinker, president; Austin Durf, vice president; Jack Zei gler, secretary; Jeanette Bouch, assistant secretary; John Witter, treasurer; Jeanette Bouch, news reporter; Mark Myers and Adam Chronister, social chairpersons; and Sonya Rinker, song leader. Meeting dates and topics for the year were discussed during the meeting. The next meeting will be held March 16 at the home of Jackie Zeigler at 7:30 p.m. Tentative plans are to have a judge speaking on how to pick a quality animla to buy for round up. State FFA Degree pins were given to Adam Coleman, son of Philip and Lee Ann Coleman, and to Dusten Weigle, son of Randy and Brenda Weigle. First-place winners in the County Agricultural Record Book Contest were Lance Bittner, Adam Coleman, Carl Metzgar, Justin Lorson, Nathan Croner, Morgan Dickey, Re bekah Fox, David Bittner, Jacob Smith, Chris Harvey and Dusten Weigle. I SUPPORT Northampton Co. 4-H Club Northampton County 4-H scholarship recipients are teens who have been active in the county 4-H Program for many years and in many capacities. These scholarship awards this year ranged from $3OO to $5OO each, with the amount deter mined by the 4-H Board of Di rectors. Seven scholarships were awarded at the 1999 4-H Achievement Banquet last De cember, during which the 4-H community honored its 4-H leaders and members for their hard work and dedication to 4- H. 1999 scholarship recipients are: Rachel Slotcavage is a senior at Catasaqua High School. Rachel hopes to attend Bucknell University in the fall majoring in biology. Her career goal is to become a Forensic Pathologist. In 4-H, she was involved in rabbit and cavy projects and is the president of the Little Ras cals 4-H Club. At school, Rachel is involved with the drama club, a member of SADD, National Honor Society, and both the Stu dent and Class Coucils. Rachel is the 1999 PA State Rabbit Breeders Association Cavy Queen and Commodity Repre sentative. Sarah Geiger is a senior at Northampton Area High School. Sarah plans to attend Penn State and major in animal science. For nine years, Sarah has participated in a variety of 4-H sewing projects. Making these garments has won her members also maintained honor roll status with their grades for scholarship pins and certifi cates: Jacob Smith, Jim McKen zie, Landon Hoppert, Bruce elites, Steve Gindlesperger, Adam Coleman, Chris Harvey, Josiah Cook, Kyle Hillegas, Matt Webreck, Jared Hillegas, Dusten Weigle, Bryan Baker and Matt Pyle. The other 4-H project that Sarah concentrates on is her swine project where she has raised the Eastern District Champion Market Hog. Pres- ently, Sarah is president of the Swine and Livestock 4-H Clubs. During the summer of 1998, Sarah participated in a 4-H ex change program with Ireland and has been on the winning potato judging team at the PA Farm Show. In 1999, Sarah was the Northampton County dele gate at the National 4-H Con gress in Atlanta, GA. Sarah is also a member of the Blue Mountain Race Team. Dana Scharantz is a senior at Saucon Valley High School and will be attending Cedar Crest College in the fall where she will major in genetic engineering. A member of the White Doves 4-H Club, Dana has completed sev eral sewing projects that won her a place on several regional and state level competitions. Dana is a Northampton County 4-H Ambassador and the recipi ent of the “I Dare You” award. At school, Dana is drum major for the SVHS Marching Panth ers, a member of the Senior Stars Competition Group at Saucon Valley Dance Conserva tory, and was crowned as Lehigh-Northampton County’s Junior Miss for 2000. Bryant Hlavanty attends Wilson Area High School and plans to attend Penn State to major in agricultural business. Bryant is a 4-H Dairy Club member and has shown his ani mals in county, regional, and state competitions. Bryant also participated in the White Doves 4-H Club and was the treasurer for two years. At school, Bryant is in the concert and jazz bands, lettered twice in soccer, and is in the ski club, baseball club, and FBLA. Rebecca Lobus attends Na zareth Area Senior High School and hopes to attend Penn State to major in public relations and marketing with a minor in teaching. Rebecca has been a 4- H member for 10 years in five different 4-H clubs, including the horse club, teen council, goat club, a rabbit and cavy club, and Adam Coleman, left, has the distinctive honor of being the recipient of a new award “Character Counts,” which is for trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, citizen ship and fairness. Karl Bader is a graduate of Nazareth Area High School and is attending Allentown College of Saint Francis De Salles. He is a technical theatre major with a concentration in lighting and sound. He has been in 4-H for 10 years and is a member of Back trackers, Leathercrafters, and Teen Council 4-H clubs. His hobbies include working on the stage, and he has owns a small mobile DJ business. Jamie Lyn Hower is a gradu ate of Nazareth Area High School. She presently attends Millersville University where she received first semester Dean’s List honors. She plans to major in biology and to minor in secondary education or forensic science. In 4-H, Jamie’s projects included entomology, potato judging, horse, and livestock. Jamie has twice captured the coveted owner-breeder champi onship at the PA Farm Show in Angus cattle breeding. The Adams County 4-H Beef Club recently held their annual Buyers’ Appreciation Banquet with 105 in attendance. The 1999 4-H beef sale buyers were guests of club members, leaders, and their families at the York Springs Fire Hall. The evening began with 4-H Beef Club President Chris Jeff coat, Littlestown, welcoming the group. 4-H and American Pledges were led by 4-H Beef Club Secretary Candice Flick inger, and Treasurer Missy Jeff coat. Each 4-H member introduced their buyer(s) after the meal. Buyers received a 4-H pottery mug and color picture of the 4-H member, steer, and buyer taken at the beef sale.
