ers dosed .50-1.00 lower. Losses came
early in the week, but the market finally
found support at the 67.00 level for the
bottom-side of the Choice steer price
range. The area experienced consider
able melting of our snow stockpile this
week, just in time to brace ourselves for
yet another significant winter storm that
moved in Friday. Slaughter cattle re
ceipts continue to be light at the auctions
and local direct country trading is re
portedly almost non- existent. North
eastern packing plants are learning to
rely on Midwestern cattle for the bulk of
their kill and Lancaster County is
merely filling in the gaps. Western
feediots sold .50-1.00 lower this week at
68.00-68.50 and mostly 108.00 dressed.
Local Holstein steer demand remained
good this week and prices held fully
steady. Slaughter cows finished weak to
1.00 lower and instances 1.50 lower on
the big fleshy cows (less than 85 pet
lean). Slaughter bulls ended the week
mostly steady. Supply included 37 per
cent slaughter steers, 6 percent slaugh-

CALVES: Compared to last week,
veal calves closed mostly steady and
larger slaughter calves ended 5.00-10.00
higher in a very light test. Holstein bull
calves returning to special-fed veal
barns fell out of a trading range that has
kept prices up for the last several
months. Fresh bulls ended the week as
much as 30.00 lower for Number 1 qual
ity calves. Some of the weakness may be
blamed on the fact that this week’s calf
placements are due to finish during the
week of July 4th. Holstein heifer prices
closed steady to weak.
