ANSWER A reader to know how to care for
a poinsettia so that it would bloom again next
year. Thanks to Richard Herring for his answer.
Step one: poinsettias need indirect sunlight at
least six hours daily. Place a curtain or light
shade between the sun and the plant if direct
sunlight can not be avoided. Temperatures
should not exceed 70°F, not fall below 55°F.
Step two: Keep poinsettias away from heat
and drafts as the soil must stay moderately
moist. Water thoroughly when the soil feels dry
to touch. Do not let the plant stand in water.
Step three: after blooming, fertilize every two
to three weeks with a balanced household fer
tilizer to maintain foilage.
Step four: when the top colored growth
(bracts) lose their appeal, cut the plant back to
about 8 inches. Though stark in appearance, by
May the plant will have new growth. By June
Ist, you should repot the plant. Use heavily or
ganic soil. Place the plant outdoors once the
weather is warm.
Step five: the plant will begin producing flo
wers in the fall. Starting Oct. 1, be sure the
poinsettia has at least 14 hours of total contin
uous darkness each night and about six to
eight hours of bright sunlight each day. The
plant will not bloom properly without this stict
regimen. Night time temperatures must not be
below 60°F.
