using a debit card because often
transactions take place in a few
days, unlike the 20 or so day’s
leeway with credit cards. With
every purchase using a debit
card, immediately enter the cost
into your check register and
deduct the sum from your bal
ance. Using these precautions,
you won’t overdraw your
account and have to pay penal
ties for bounced checks.
If a debit card sounds good to
you, check with your bank first.
Ask if it charges a fee every time
you use the debit card. This
practice increases your cost of
doing business and it might not
be worth the inconvenience of
doing business at that bank.
Three types of smartcards
are available: single purpose
(telephone card), a prepaid dis
posable bankcard (bought from
the bank and used for purchases
anywhere there is a smartcard
terminal); and a reloadable card
(when your money runs out, you
can add more to the balance).
