Supply was attractive and demand was fairly good, but slow trading kept the market from reaching its potential. A good run of Holstein steers sold .50-1.00 higher. There were not enough slaugh ter cows on Tuesday for a comparison, but prices were 1.00 than last week. Slaughter bulls sold sharply higher, as bulls have been scarce this past week. Supply included 30 pet slaughter steers and 50 pet slaughter cows. SLAUGHTER STEERS: High Choice and Prime 2-4 1190-1525 lbs 70.50- 74.25. Larger slaughter calves were not well tested. There was a large supply of Holstein calves to return to feed, due to the winter storm that limited movement earlier in the week. Holstein bulls sold steady to 13.00 lower than Monday, even on the larger offering. Holstein heifer prices were steady to firm with a greater variety of heifers than on Monday. The entire Northeast was dominated by this week’s huge winter storm. Live stock movement was very difficult as most local areas received anywhere from a foot to as much as 20 inches of snow. Western feedlot cattle sold mostly 1.00 lower this week from 67.00-68.00 live and 107.00-108.00 dressed. Boxed beef values also lost ground this past week, but beef promotion must be fi nally paying off as the NCBA reported a 3.5 percent increase in beef demand, after 20 years of declining. Local Hol stein steers closed .50-1.00 higher than last week. The slaughter cow market benefited from the snow as buyers scrambled for cows. Prices ended 1.00 higher, after selling sharply higher on light receipts early in the week. Slaugh ter bulls closed sharply higher on a very thin test Supply included 39 percent slaughter steers, 6 percent slaughter heifers, 42 percent slaughter cows, 4 percent bulls, with the balance feeders.
