able to growers with qualifying

quarterly newsletter, and con

The 20-member board was
established by the Fluid Milk
Promotion Act of 1990 to develop
and administer a coordinated prog
ram of advertising and education
to promote fluid milk products. Of
die 20 members, 15 represent geo
graphic regions and five are at
large members of the board. The
at-large members must include at
least three fluid milk processors
and at least one member from the

USDA will accept nominations
for board representation in five
geographic regions and for two at
large positions. Nominees for all
regional positions and at least one
at-large position must be active
owners or employees of a fluid
milk processor. The other at-large
position may be filled by a member
of the general public. The geo
graphic regions are: Region 3
(Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylva
nia, Virginia, and the District of
Columbia); Region 6 (Ohio and
West Virginia); Region 9 (Alaba
ma, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missis
sippi and Tennessee); Region 12
(Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico,
Nevada, and Utah); and Region IS
(Southern California). No fluid

Glickman appointed former
Rep. Dennis Eckart, D-Ohio, as
chairman of the 38-member
panel. So diverse are the views
of the committee’s members that
USDA plans to hire a profes
sional facilitator to help Eckart
manage the panel.

approved new varieties without
adequately testing their poten
tial impact on the environment.
USDA is among several agen
cies involved in regulating
biotech crops. Others include
the Food and Drug Administra
tion and the Environmental
Protection Agency.
