Tops in Their Millennium
Responding to a question from The World Almanac
(World Almanac Books, 1999), Pulitzer pnze-wm
ning historian Arthur M. Schlesmger Jr. named his
choices for the ten most-influential people in the second
millennium. Do you recognize all ten? Listed in order of
importance, they are. William Shakespeare, Isaac
Newton, Charles Darwin, Nicholaus
Copernicus, Galileo Galilei, Albert
Einstein, Christopher Columbus,
Abraham Lincoln, Johann Gutenberg,
and William Harvey. Gutenberg
(c. 1397-1468) was a German print
er, the first to use movable type
cast in molds, and Harvey (1578-1657) is considered by
some to be the founder of modem medicine for his dis
coveries about the heart.
A stitch in time would have confused Einstein.
