This company will be our host for the February Bth lunch and tour of their continually expanding facility Deka has grown into one of the largest battery manufacturing facilities in the world From a single man's operation in his garage. The battery and cable plants cover several acres and are still family owned and operated with approximately 3,000 employees. There will be time allowed for purchases of their products in the outlet store the day of the tour. KUNKEL DAIRY FARM Terry and Sue Kunkel, and their son, Ethan, milk 140 Holstems in the rolling hills of Kempton, located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Their family's commitment to the dairy industry was emphasized last January 27th, when they moved into a totally new milking facility and formed a father/son partnership. Their Holstems are milked 3 times a day in a Mag 70 double 8 (expandable to 10 ) basement milking parlor. Their milking center is a total flush clean out system. The 180 acres of tillable soil are used for corn and alfalfa production to feed the 140 cows. All of the Kunkel's replacement stock are custom raised Their crops are custom planted and harvested leaving more time to be spent with their cows The Kunkel's are Kutztown Young Farmer Members and are anxious to show you their facility on February Bth, 2000. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8. 2000 The ladies program will begin Wednesday morning at the hotel with a few simple craft projects followed by a program given by Ruth Smith on “Preserving Your Photographs and Memories” Ruth is a Unit Leader with the Creative Memories Company. Kutztown Young Farmer member, Melinda Tercha, will also be providing some tips on taking photographs Melinda has won numerous photography awards on both a local and national level. At noontime the woman will board the bus to have lunch and an afternoon of shopping. The first stop will be The Shoppes at Green Valley Nursery Upon arrival lunch will be served at The Stone House. The women wdl then be left loose to shop at a variety of stores on the premises. Options include the Nursery Shop which features garden accessories and candles, an old stone home which focuses on country and folk art items, The Lang Shop which sells Lang Calendars, note cards, figurines, etc, and the Boyd Bear Shop which stocks a huge supply of Boyd’s Bears and Ty Beanie Babies We will then board the bus to head to Conover's Furniture Store. Conover's features Yield House furniture as well as lots of unpamted furniture and accessories The women will want to bring their husbands back here with the pickup truck on the way home. Time permitting we will slop at a few more stores in the area before returning back to the hotel to prepare for the evening banquet THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2000 RAMJMDUSIRIESJNC. Ram Industries employs 350 people at their Leesport Plant, which is nestled in the beautiful orchard area of Berks County. This operation will be of interest to alt who attend this-tour. The 2000 Pennsylvania Holstein Convention is set for February 17-18 at the Clarion Hotel in Carlisle. The Convention includes a tour to the state capitol, panel discussions on “Milk Market ing” and “Welcome to the Inter net,” the convention banquet, awards breakfast and program, Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association silent auction, annual meeting, ladies program, and the annual convention sale. On Thursday, the host coun ties invite participants to attend host day activities. The two panel discussions scheduled for Thursday afternoon include Ken Bailey, Penn State dairy marketing specialist, and Dr. Mark Varner from the Univer sity of Maryland, animal and avian sciences. Zip At 2 p.m., Bailey will update workshop participants on milk marketing. He will explain the pricing systems, reasons for the current prices, and what dairy producers can do in reference to milk marketing. His nine original breeding stock calves were purchased from Trexler Game Preserve located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. Carl's herd is raised on the outskirts of Kutztown (Berks County, Pennsylvania) and has increased over the last 7 years to 27 head of buffalo. He markets breeding stock and a few animals for slaughter. Buffalo handling seems to be Carl’s biggest challenge. Carl farms JQQ acres, of 62 acres are tillable.
