LOU ANN GOOD
Lancaster Fanning Staff
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
At the Pennsylvania Farm
Show, most of the 176 breeding
sheep arc long term projects for the
youth exhibitors. Years of selec
tive breeding have perfected the
bloodlines.
Many of the exhibitors ate con
sistent winners but every year a
few new names pop up. This year
was no exception.
Cheviot
Champion and reserve Cheviot
were shown by Tony Haugh. This
was the second year in a row that
Tony won in this breed. The
Meredith Ruezowizz from Delaware County shows the
champion Dorset.
Jaime Fought, 15, shows the grand champion South
down. She also showed the reserve champion Southdown
and the grand champion and reserve Hampshire.
Ten-year-old Katrina Frey shows the Suffolk grand
champion.
champion was purchased from
John Eaton, and the reserve was
home bred. Tony and his dad Den
ny have 19 head on their Red Lion
farm.
Corriedale
Champion and reserve were
shown by Morgan Schrock. The
IS-year-old raises 10 homebred
ewes on her grandpa’s farm in
Bloomsburg, Columbia County.
The daughter of Roger and Janice
reported that she won in her first
year of competition at the state
event
Dorset
Champion was shown by Mere
dith Ruzowicz of Delaware Coun-
ty and the reserve by Bethany
Tuhacck, Harlcysvillc. The
17-ycar-old Meredith said that she
had purchased the champion to add
to the 25 head of Dorsets she raises.
This was Meredith’s first win as
the grand champion but her brother
Ben has won numerous times.
Hampshire
Jaimi Fought showed the
champion and reserve in this large
frame breed and in the Southdown
breed.
Jaimi is carrying on her family's
tradition of winning at the Farm
Show. Her dad John. (Speedy)
Fought is well known in sheep cir
cles. The family raises 80 head on
their Sulfur Run Farm in Carlisle.
Merino
Darren Crouse, 13, showed the
champion and reserve Merinos. He
and his brother Travis, 12, have
won this distinction every year for
the last four. The brothers and their
parents. Lew and Debbie, have
120-head on their Sycomore farm
in Green County.
Rambouillct
Billy Lcib showed the champion
and Christina Gardner the reserve.
Leib with his parents Bob and
Suzie raise many champion ewes
under the name Shepherd’s Crook
in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland
County.
Shropshire
Amanda Lynn Miller, Bcmvillc,
Berks County, showed the grand
champion. The reserve was shown s
by Jessica McMurtrie of Pleasant
Gap, Centre County.
Southdown
Jaime Fought, who also showed
the grand champion and reserve in
the Hampshire breed, showed the
champion and reserve Southdown.
Jaime is from Carlise, Cumberland
County.
Suffolk
Katrina Frey showed the champion
Suffolk. The Suffolk ewe is the
same one that clinched the Suffolk
championship last year as a lamb.
In fact, it is the first lamb Katrina
was given to start her flock. In the
past, Katrina’s mother, Nancy, and
grandparents have been well
known winners with their breeding
flock from Breczevicw Farm.
The judge said the Suffolk
champion was the most put
together. The same ewe had won
the Lancaster County 4-H supreme
champion.
“I’m going to take her home to
have more lambs,” Katrina said.
Shane Conaway showed the
reserve Suffolk.
Montadale
In his last year of showing, Paul
Kitzmiller did it again. He showed
the champion and reserve in the
Montadale breed. Paul with the
help of his mother Thelma raise 20
head of Montadale and Dorsets on
their York County farm.
Columbia
Travis Crouse showed champ
ion and reserve. His brother Darren
had won the Merino breed champ
ion trophies. The brothers and their
parents, Lew and Debbie, have
120-head on their Syoomore farm
in Green County.
Oxford
Jacob Garges, Montgomery
County, showed the champion and
Billy Leib, Cumberland County,
