Quality Of Eggs Not Affected By Lack Of Competitors

HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) A perfect score was
Lancaster County Poultry Ambassador Dana Groff from
Quarryville displays the perfect dozen of eggs. This dozen of
white eggs from Esbenshade Farm was awarded 100 points
during the egg judging competition at Farm Show.

judging competition at the
Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Lone exhibitor Esbenshade
Farm from Mt. Joy in Lancaster
Co. entered 41 dozen in the
competition.
With his "Best Dozen White
Eggs," Esbenshade was awarded
a perfect score of 100 points. The
eggs are judged on uniformity of
weight, shape, color, texture,
condition, and interior quality.
Esbenshade also received
five other awards, including
"Best Dozen Brown Eggs," "Best
Five Dozen White Eggs," "Best
Dozen Eggs In Commercial
Class," and "Best Dozen Eggs In
Broken Out Quality."
According to John Schwartz,
Lancaster County Extension
Director, the quantity of
competitors did not hurt the
quality of the competition.
"These are some of the
highest quality eggs we've seen
in recent years," said Schwartz.

New Horse-Pulling
Weight Record Set
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
Billy Howard of Acme, set a
new Farm Show record of 4,000
pounds during the 2000
Championship Horse Pulling at
the 84th Pennsylvania State Farm
Show.
The team of Howard, Buhler,
and Slaybaugh won both the light
weight and heavyweight divi
sions. Seventeen-year-old Bobby
Howard, who drove the winning
lightweight team is the third
generation of teamsters.
Both divisions ask the horses to
exert the maximum effort during a
short period of time for a safe dis
tance, which is not harmful to the
horses. Each pull lasts only five to
IS seconds, totaling a minute or
two of work over the whole con
test
In the heavyweight division, the
5,000-pound pulling-pair of the
Howards won first place with a
full pull of 27 feet, six inches. Sam
Hawley of Spartansburg, took sec
ond place. His team pulled over
the record load of 4,000 pounds a
total of 25 feet, six inches. Third
place went to Jim Seuter of
Somerset County. Sam Hawley
was also awarded the Peter C.
Buhier Memorial Horsemanship
Award for Outstanding Teamster.
In the lightweight division, the
Brown Brothers of Acme won
second place and Ira Kessler of
Bradford County took third. The
Peter C. Buhier Memorial Horse
manship Award for Outstanding
Teamster went to Charlie Brown
of Columbia Crossroads.
