A26-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 15, 2000 Belgian Mare Named EVERETT NEWSWANGER Editor HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co) - "Lon Acres Lucinda", a 2-year old Belgian mare owned by Ryburn Homestead in Washington, Washington County, was named grand champion draft horse at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. "Lucy" was named the first place Belgian 2-year-old, and best of breed on the way to the supreme award. Mark Ryburn, who owns Lucy together with his father Donald Ryburn, said his family has long been involved with horses. Horses, he said, have been kept on the homestead since his ancestors began to farm in 1793. Ryburn's grandfather Frank Ramage, now m his 70's drove horses m the Farm Show's horse pulling contests as a young man. In the Percheron show, Knight Star Candy's Legacy, shown by Charles Porter and owned by Norma Packard, Hanburg, was the bleed champion. He exhi bited three Southbounds and six Oxfords in this year’s meat d!\i sion, while exhibiting three ra.ii bouillets in the wool division cf the Farm Show sheep show. 19-year-old Leib is the current Pennsylvania FFA Vice-President and had double duty at this year’s Farm Show. “I’ve been running from one end of the complex to the other to keep up with my FFA duties and take care of my sheep.” said Leib. “Winning feels good. It makes all of that hard work and dedication pay off.” The Supreme Champion Ram is owned by Mike and Wendy Van Wagner of Van Bar Farms in Dau phin Co. The yearling ram named ’Trouble” found more than trouble at this year’s Farm Show, earning the championship titles of the Dorset division and meat breeds before being named Supreme Ram. The Van Wagners have exhi bited at Farm Show for the past five or six years. They showed two animals in this year’s sheep show. The two animals won Champion Ram and Ewe in the Dorset breed. The Van Wagners have SO to 60 sheep on their farm and run 3S brood ewes. They also have a Tainting and wall covering busi ness. “Mike runs the farm while I run the contracting business.” said Wendy. “But I still get to nurture the sheep.” Roger and Linda Thomas, Aaronsburg, had the breed champion in the Shire/Clydesdale draft horse show.
