The first “one roof show was
conducted in the current building
at Cameron and Maclay streets,
formerly a cow pasture for the Har
risburg State Hospital, at the ISth
show in 1931. That’s when it offi
cially became known as the Pen
nsylvania State Farm Show.
“As we enter the new millen
nium, the 2000 Farm Show pro
vides a unique venue to witness
both the latest in agricultural tech
nologies and time-honored tradi
tions,” said Samuel E. Hayes Jr.,
state secretary of agriculture.
Hayes noted that agriculture is
Pennsylvania’s Number 1 indus
try, generating $44.1 billion from
farm to table.

The biotech program, a daylong
program Tuesday, Jan. 11 at the
Agriculture Building, is for nons
pecialists and will concentrate on
various aspects of agricultural
biotechnology and potential
contributions.
Many popular events are return
ing to this year's show, such as the
Sheep-to-Shawl contest in the
Small Arena Monday, Jan. 10, at 5
pm. Also, the Farm Show’s Fami
ly Living and Agricultural Learn
ing Center will offer a unique array
of activities that seek to educate
and entertain not only children but
adults, according to Hayes.
“This exhibit provides various
hands-on presentations for child
ren so they may better understand
the value and importance of Pen
nsylvania's agriculture,” Hayes
said. Presentations for adults ate
included, such as cooking, quilt
ing, and farm safety.
The demonstrations will be con
ducted Saturday through Thursday
on the upper level of the Northeast
Building. They include quilting,
spinning and weaving, flax and
lace making, live butterflies, agri
cultural biotechnology, digital
television, health screening, and
4-H and FFA presentations. The
Pennsylvania Department of
Health will provide blood, glu
cose, and blood pressure screening
and immunization record checks.
Visitors may also talk to profes
sionals about specific health
interests.

Also part of the Farm Show is
the second annual Juried Art
Exhibition, which benefits the
Pennsylvania Farm Show Scholar
ship Foundation for Pennsylvania
college students. Submitted art
work and prints will be available
for purchase throughout the show
