In pre-Christian Rome. December 17 to 27 was Saturnalia,
a celebration in honoi of the plantei god, Saturn Like
solstice celebrations. Saturnalia Icatuied great feast
ing, candlehghting and bonfires, and sustained revelry

bolic of renewal) weie biought inside or displayed m
the streets Some historians theorize that the December
25 nativity date was intended to diaw attention away
from these Saturnalia celebrations, which were seen as

greater unity ol celebrations
Now with bright holly all the temples straw,
With laurel green and sacred mistletoe.

or sweets to give as last-minute gifts.
