WASHINGTON, D.C. The
USDA has announced that the
opening date for hurley tobacco
auction sales has been delayed
until Nov. 29.
Burley tobacco auction sales
were originally scheduled to open
on Nov. 22. This date was recom
mended by the Burley Tobacco
Advisoiy Committee (BTAQ on
June 10 and followed a more than
30-year tradition of beginning bur
ley tobacco auctions on the Mon
day prior to Thanksgiving.
The Tobacco Association of
United States (TAUS) made a
request to the chairperson of the
BTAC, to delay the market open
ing until Nov. 29, add one addi
tional sale day on Dec. 10, and
recess the markets on Dec. 16 for a
total of 13 sale days before the
holidays. The request was made to
help TAUS members overcome
the problems of destruction, conta-

initiation, and shutdowns caused
by Hurricane Floyd and subse
quent flooding. The delay would
give processors an opportunity to
complete flue-cured tobacco pur
chasing and processing.
At the request of the BTAC
chairperson, USDA conducted a
telephone poll of BTAC members
and learned that the majority sup
ported the TAUS request Also,
BTAC members were polled to
determine if they favored delaying
the official weigh-in date from
Nov. 8 to Nov. 15. A majority of
members did not favor delaying
the official weigh-in date.
Tobacco inspection and price
support services will be made
available at designated auction
markets beginning on Monday,
Nov. 29. Sales are scheduled to
resume on Jan. 10, after the
holidays.
