Club Meeting Set
Friday evening, October 29,1999 will feature the annual dinner meeting m the Penn State
Dairymen’s Club at Celebration Hall. 2280 Commercial Blvd., State College Arrival time is 6 00 -
6'30 P M. with the dinner at 6:30 P M. Wc’rc looking forward to alumni ami friends having this
opportunity to visit and share.
A milk bottle with unique artwork for Penn State Dairymen’s Club is readv to raise funds for the
Penn Stale Dairymen’s Club Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund supports activities of the
Penn State Dairy Judging Team as well as the Poage Grant-in-Aid. We plan to have the bottles
for sale at the annual meeting and at the Nittany Lion Fall Classic at a cosi .if S 10.00 each. These
would be wonderful gifts or a perfect item for your Penn State or dairy collection. There are only
300 ordered with the first logo on them. They will be sold on a “First cornu. First served" basis.
The Penn State Dairymen's Club is a non-profit support group whose mission is to enhance
activities between the dairy industry and the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences. New

Directions to Celebration Hall. From downtown State College, go north on Rt. 26. At the traffic
light by College Gardens Nursery and Dunkin' Donuts, turn left on Gerald Street. Commercial Blv
is the fust left turn. Celebration Hall is the last building on the street.
Scholarships Worth $8,850 Awarded To Jersey Youth
Ten Jersey juniors continuing their educations in agricultural science and leadership programs at institutions in
Illinois, lowa, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia and Wisconsin will receive scholarships valued at $8,850 during the Junior
Banquet on November 6, 1999, concluding All American Junior Day in Louisville, Ky.
Support for the scholarship program of the American Jersey Cattle Association comes from five different funds
managed in perpetuity by the AJCA, plus three awards provided by individual sponsors.
The Jack C. Nisbet Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 1965 to honor this former Executive Secretary of
The American Jersey Cattle Association. All nominees for the National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest in the
year announced are eligible for consideration.
Two Nisbet Scholarships of $BOO each will be presented to Bryan Marcoot, Greepville, 111., and Kristin Badass,
Janesville, Wis. Marcoot and Badass were tanked first and second, respectively, in the 1998 achievement contest.
Marcoot it the son of Roger and Anita Marcoot, and is a senior at the University Illinois majoring in dairy manage
ment in the Animal Science program. Knstin is a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she
is majoring in dairy science. Badass just completed her second summer internship with Midwest Dairy Business.
She is the daughter of William and Marion Bar lass.
The fond commemorating “Vic” Peterson, the dean of Jersey area representatives, was established in 1972. This
year, Tem R. Billman, West Salem, Ohio and Shelley Thompson, Chandler, Okla., were selected to receive the $750
awards.
Billman just completed a summer internship with the AJCA Communication Department this summer and is now
attending Ohio State Unversity Agriculture Technical Institute, where she is double majodng in dairy production
management and business management. Tem is the daughter of James and Linda Billman. Thompson is the daugh
ter of Robert and Jamne Thompson, and is a senior in Agricultural Communications and Animal Science at Okla
homa State Umveisity She has been a state 4-H dairy project winner, a delegate to the National 4-H Dairy confer
ence, a member of OSUb dairy judging team and was the 1996 National Jersey Queen
This fund wii created in 1965 to honor Paul Jackson's service to the Jersey breed spanned more than half a
century. Jennifer Kunde, Manchester, lowa, will receive a $650 Jackson scholarship for 1999-2000 She is the
daughter of David and Donna Kunde, and currently a junior at lowa Slate University An active 4-H member and
now the National Jersey Queen, Jennifer is also the secretary-treasurer of the lowa Jersey Cattle Club
William A. Russell’s lifetime of experience with and service to the Jersey breed is commemorated by the scholar
ships established in 1977 These awards are designated for students who have completed high school and are
beginning their university studies
Recipients of $6OO awards are Tara Bohnert, East Moline, 111, and Veronica L Steer, Cottage Grove, Tenn
Tara is the daughter of James and Wanda Bohnert and is a freshman at the University ot Illinois, working towards
a degree in Animal Sciences with a dairy emphasis Veronica is a freshman attending Virginia Tech in Blacksburg,
Va, graduating from Henry County High School with a 3 51 GPA. The daughter of Charles and Carol Steer started
her Jersey herd with purchases from the South Carolina Pot of Gold Sale and the National Heifer Sale. Veronica has
earned many awards for her showmanship, judging and records in 4-H and FFA
The Reuben R. Cowles Youth Award supports a variety of educational experiences for individuals who are no older
than 30 and who live in six southeastern states The trustees of this fund selected Veronica Steer (see above) and Ins
D Peeler, Starr, SC„ to each receive a $7OO cash award, presented at the Dixie Invitational Sale on September 6 Both
are applying these awards to their expenses in attending Virginia Tech
Peeler is the daughter of L D. and Sherne Peeler, and was the winner of the 1997 National Jersey Youth Achieve
ment Contest. Ins received the Gold Emblem in Dairy Proficiency and the Silver Emblem for Diversified Livestock
Proficiency from National FFA, and also has been the South Carolina 4-H dairy project winner

Stanley K. Bansen Memorial Scbolanhtp
The Bansen Scholarship was begun in 1991 by Dora Bansen and her family, to honor their late husband and father,
Stan. It is designated for a student who is pursuing graduate studies in the animal sciences, ag business or veterinary
science.
The 1999-2000 recipient of this $l,OOO award is Amy Plummer of Chalfont, Penna., currently a second-year
student in veterinary medicine at The Ohio State University. Reproductive physiology is of special interest to this
graduate of the University of Tennessee. She has assisted with embryo transfer and confected research on IGF-1 and
BST
Advanced Bovine Technologies LLC of Edgewood, N. M„ provided $l,OOO this year to support a student who
demonstrates, through his/her academic program of study, goal statement and supporting letters, the clear intention to
pursue a career m agriculture. The recipient is David A Jordan, a senior majonng in agriculture leadership education
at the University of Illinois.
Jordan is the son of Robert and Joan Jordan, Assumption, 111, and earned numerous honors through his 4-H and
FFA work, including the American FFA Degree. He has maintained a GPA of 3.44 at the University of Illinois, with
extracurricular activities including the Agncuture Education Club, the lllini Dairy Club, and the Illini Dairy Judging
Teams Over tt» past two summers, he has completed internships with Novartis, the American Jersey Cattle Associa
tion and Select Sires, Inc
ABS Global/Ewing Scholarship
The tenth scholarship to be presented during the Junior Banquet wiH be the ABS Global/Moms B Ewing Scholar
