Calling All Angels
Michaelmas Day (September 29) is the feast day of
Michael the archangel. In the British Isles, crops
were harvested and the surplus sold by late
September, so farmers paid their yearly rent to
landowners on Michaelmas. Appropriate food and drink
for All Angels, or Michaelmas Day, was
roasted goose (originally a sacrifice to
Michael), oat or barley cakes (or, in
Scotland, rye), carrots (especially in
Ireland), and new wine Great market
fairs were held just before the feast
day, and the large crowds made it con
venient to hold elections then as well
if St. Michael brings many acorns,
Christmas will cover the fields with snow.
