ANDY ANDREWS
Lancaster Farming Staff
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
The state's premier junior dairy
showcase competition featured
about 808 animals in three show
tings here all day Monday during
the Pennsylvania Junior Dairy
Show at the Farm Show Complex.
In the Holstein division, rising
to the top of all classes was the
senior 3-year-old cow shown by
Scott Walton, son of David and
Kathy Walton, Carlisle.
Judge Denny Ferguson, Dtyden,
N.Y., noted the overall "strength''
of the Holstein show, featuring
"big, strong cows with a lot of
capacity and udder."
For the grand champion, Fergu
son picked the senior 3-year-old,
Fountain Farm Emory Emeline (S:
MJR Blackstar Emory-ET, D:
Fountain Farm Star B Empress,
and bred by Harry E. and Aliene
Thompson, Carlisle), shown by
Scott Walton, a freshman at Carli
sle High School.
Ferguson noted the cow's “com
bination of strength and dairy char
acter —that's what I like to see,"
he said. Ferguson noted the 3-year
old’s size, and that it “moves very
well in the ring." He said the cow
had a "super udder with a great
crease.”
Walton, who won his first
championship at the state junior
show, also showed the reserve, a
5-year-old, Tower Vue Counselor
Abby.
Walton, who exhibits at the
Shippensburg Fair and the state
Farm Show, noted the Pennsylva
nia Junior Daily Show, held during
the same week as the All Ameri
can, is the biggest show of the year
for him. Walton helps care for his
family’s 159-cow dairy of all
registered Holstein.
The grand champion Holstein is
rated VGB7 and milks about
27,000 pounds per year. The fami
ly ships milk to Kemp's.
Ferguson provided an honorable
mention to the senior 3-year-old,
Locker-Lane Emory Babe (S: MJR
Blacks tar Emory-ET, D: Locker-
Lane Southwind Betsy, and bred
by Wayne E. Schrock), exhibited
by Desirae D. Hillegass, Berlin,
Somerset County.
In the Holstein show, senior best
bred and owned was awarded to
Matthew E. Martin, Mercersburg,
Franklin County, for his junior
3-year-old, Two-top Juror Finesse
(S: Ked Juror-ET, D: Two-Top
Skybuck Fancy).
In the junior division, Ferguson
chose the best bred-and-owned
animal shown by Amanda Cessna,
