The champion Suffolk ewe in the youth breeding sheep
show at the York Fair was named the supreme champion
for breeder and exhibitor Travis Fiory.
Mary Zeigler, Dallestown had the supreme champion ewe in
the youth show of the wool breeds.
Burrell Tops Market Lamb Shows At York Fair

YORK (York Co.) Mike
Burrell reached a longtime goal in
his final year of 4-H competition
at the York Fair, snagging the
grand champion market lamb in
the open class with a homebred
ewe.
The Dover junior exhibitor also
claimed the top honors in the
junior show, as the reserve open
champion took the youth divi
sion’s championship. He further
claimed the top pairs award in the
youth show with an additional two
entries.
The open class champion, “Fil
by,” is a purebred Suffolk from
Burrell’s 20-head flock, develop
ed during his decade of youth
project participation. The fresh
men at Messiah College, aiming at
a medical career, the 19-year-old
plans to continue a developing his
flock as a senior exhibitor. Most
of Burrell’s numerous champion
ewes over the years have been re
turned to his flock for breeding
use, developing the bloodlines
which continue to put him in the
winner’s spot
“I’ve learned a lot through this,
mainly that it’s a mind game, us
ing your head, and it’s hard work,”
Burrell observed, reflecting on his
successful 4-H career.
Reserve champion of the mar
ket lamb junior show was Jen
Flinchbaugh of York. The Penn
State freshman is also a veteran
4-H sheep exhibitor and took the
reserve honors with her home
bred, crossed wether. With her
youth background in livestock
breeding and exhibiting, Flinch
baugh is majoring in animal bio
science and considers future work
in genetics research.
Reserve champion pair of the
junior show was exhibited by Rick
Jones, East Berlin. Jones. 12, took
the runner-up honors with a pair of
crossbreds.

YORK (York Co.) A pair of
homebred animals took top honors
for their 4-H owners in the junior
sheep breeding show at the York
Fair last week.
Travis Flory, Red Lion, topped
the runoff among breeds to earn
the supreme champion ewe banner
with his Suffolk division winner.
It was the second supreme honor
that Flory, 14 has garnered during
his five years of junior competi
tion.
In the ram classes, it was Jen
Flinchbaugh and her Southdown,

Joe Emenheiser, IS, and Mark
Brown, 14, the York Fair’s junior
shepherding contest gave them a
chance to display their skills and
knowledge, as they bested all
other age winners for the top
Shepherds’ Class awards. The
contest includes blocking and
grooming, identification of feeds
and equipment, judging a class of
lambs and written management
tests.
