The Airville junior 4-H’er’s crossbred steer was purchased from Montana, where the chilly weather earned him the “cold as ice” moniker. When the weather was far from cold during the past summer’s heat extremes. “Ice” was chilled down with cooling fans in the Long family’s bem on their Airville farm to keep him eating and growing to his show weight of 1,265 pounds. The champion win was the first for the third-year junior exhibitor. Reserve champion Tammi Grubb likewise took the fan ap proach to battle summer-heat problems on her beef animals. Hope long earned the Supreme Champion Heifer honors in the junior beef breeding show at the York Fair, besting other contenders with her Angus late junior yearling. The Airville 4-H’cr took the su preme banner over a field of champion heifers including the Charolais entry of Philip Baer, Amanda Daugherty’s winning Hereford, the top Simmental of Aubrey Eyler and Kelly Hain’s Red Angus. The Supreme Heifer of the open class beef exhibits at the York Fair was the Hereford winner owned by Margeaux Flrestlne. “Western Gem” is a May ’9B heifer, in addition to exhibiting her top placing heifer at recent national and state shows, Margeaux is the state Polled Hereford Queen. York Fair Junior Market Steer Show Gets ‘lced’ who weighed in at 1,157 pounds. Entry numbers in the junior market steer show were down, as more exhibitors this year seemed to be aiming at Farm Show com petition. Those younger beef ani mals competed in the increasing ly-popular Prospect Class, with more than 20 entries this year. Champion of the Prospect Steer runoff was Tammi Grubb with the heavyweight class winner, an An gus-Chianina-Maine crossbred named “Jazz.” Reserve champion prospect steer was the runner-up heavy weight, exhibited by Hope Long.
